I was working at Music Villa in Santa Fe in 1976-77 when the reps for North & Gianinni Guitars came by in their motorhome. They had Billy Cobham's yellow North set & offered to sell it to me :)
Here`s a North set for sale on Reverb...A copy of the listing and pic for future reference...Price $1799.00
I am the original owner of these Vintage 1970's rare and hard to find fiberglass North Drum set w/ Premier chrome snare drum 5x14. 22" Bass Drum, Toms are 10" & 12" and 16" floor tom, The kit is outfitted with brand new EVANS Onyx heads and the snare with Evans UV1 coated head. It comes with a brand new Zenison heavy duty chrome drum rack and brand new snare stand. The tom toms can be either rear mounted (as shown) on the rack, or side mounted, as the toms are predrilled (see photos for details). The bass drum can be used standard as shown or mounted as they also are predrilled and come with the (removable) mounts on them (please see photos for details). In the past, Back in the 80's The bass drum, had a small cymbal holder mount on the top, which was later removed and filled in it's place (see photos for details)
Overall this is kit is a great throwback to the 70s. It's flashy, decadent, and polarizing. You will become the envy of your drummer friends everywhere. The white shells, with the black insides make for a dazzling look once the lights hit them on stage, not to mention the Incredible sound that North drums project. These are a great addition to any serious drum collectors, collection. There is not another kit out there like this one and once there gone there gone
Christmas shopping for your favorite special drummer ? Just imagine the the look on their face when they find these north drums underneath the tree on x-mas morning :)

Beautiful kit
I remember seeing Billy Cobham using a few of these back in the 70's
Always wanted one due to their coolness as well as the fantastic projected sound they make. One day . . . .
I also heard a lot of good, bad, weird stuff about the snare though, anyone have insights into them?

Michael!
I saw Billy Cobham for the 1st time in 1973 with The Mahavishnu Orchestra, and he was of course playing his Fibes Crystalite clear acrylic set. Blew me away ... both Cobham AND the Fibes! So much so that I bought my 1st set of Fibes in late 1973. Clear Crystalite of course! :) Two years later I saw him again, only this time touring in support of his "Total Eclipse" and Crosswinds" albums. Billy was still playing the clear Fibes Crystalite's, but with the addition of TWO North drums, which none of us had EVER seen .. or heard .. prior. WOW! A year later I caught him again, and he still had the two North drums, but instead of white, they were yellow ... same incredible sound when he laid into them though. That was it for me! I added in two North toms to my Fibes clear Crystalite's, and played that configuration for quite awhile. I was working with a 9 piece horn band doing all Funk/Soul, and those drums were perfect across the board for that gig. I went on to see Billy Cobham three more times!, but by the next time he was with TAMA ... and the North drums were gone. I'll attach a few pics. Please forgive my taking the resonant heads off the toms, but it was after all ... the 70's! :)
... regarding the North snare drum question: My buddy added in THREE North toms to his set of Fibes at the same time. Two rack toms, a North floor tom!, and yes, the North snare drum! The snare drum did NOT stay very long in his set up. EXTREMELY cumbersome and a bit uncomfortable to get positioned nicely in the "standard" snare drum spot on one's set .. and .. the note of the drum while having incredible definition and articulation ... was BONE DRY. Almost military gut snare marcher dry. He tried different batter weights, snares, etc., but just didn't like the sound, or the fact that it was uncomfortable to play. The THREE North toms stayed however! I'll attach a couple pics for all to see of the North snare drum too!

Anymore out there?
