Star snare drum - MIJ - rubber grommet issue

Loading...

Hello fellows -

I recently acquired a Star "Made in Japan" snare that will complete my Star kit restore. I have disassembled the snare and have found behind the washers of the lugs, there is what I think was a rubber grommet. Of course, being a vintage drum, these are all dried out. No problem, I thought they would come off with a little force of the fingernail. Nope. I soaked the drum in warm water and a little Dawn. It softened the area around the washers but the dried bit is still holding the washer on. And it's leaving a residue that is unsightly. Any ideas on how to remove this? I tried to pry off with a flathead screwdriver but was afraid to apply too much force for fear of scraping up the interior of the drum. See pictures for a better explanation. Thanks for any hints.

-Doug

Hey, Doug, as you know, I have had a little experience in these old Stars! You were really wise Not to use the screw driver. No matter how careful you are, it will slip and scratch! Try soaking the dried up old washers with a good spray of WD-40 . Even machine oil overnight. Age cracks and dries these old washers beyond repair. That's okay. They can be replaced if necessary. I hope this may help.

That looks like neoprene, a form of uncured rubber. yes WD-40 will cut it, so will gasoline.

It`s a drum,.....Hit It !!

I doubt very much if they can be purchased, Doug. I can't remember but, I think I may have used t-rod nylon washers as replacements. I'm not sure if they are wide enough though. Your local hardware store might be a source.

Yeah Mike- I think they are gasket washers or something.

You could also contact someone like Anchor Rubber Products. There is one in CT near where the drum show is. They can get all sorts of rubber stuff but also custom cut the right size washers from the correct rubber (or a modern improved one). I have a contact there as they make stuff for us. Let me know if interested.

Sealing washers...not sure why they were used on the drum. Used mostly for roofing or siding to seal out moisture I believe.

The WD40 soak didn't work - still stuck on the drum. So, I guess I'll try and pick off the remains and reassemble.
