I've always been a Remo guy. But I've gotten some used drums with used heads on them some of which were Evans. Sound and feel great. If money were no object I'd experiment more. Since you've got them - go for it! You might dig them. So many options!

Others may be able to give you more in depth info on some of the heads, but to my ears, the Evans G1 is pretty close in sound and feel to a Remo Ambassador. Their G2 is pretty close to the Emperor. I really can't tell that much of a difference between those series, but have been putting Evans G2 top and G1 bottoms on my toms for the past few years, based on a pro drummer friend's recommendation and nothing more. I have an Evans Dry on my Pork Pie Big Black and my '76 Acrolite, an Emperor reverse dot on my '67 Supra, and I like them all. As far as some of the more specialty heads out there (calftone, fibreskyn, etc) I couldn't give any knowledgeable advice on those.

I generally use Remo, but I won a few sets of Evans a few years ago. My Slingerlands still sound like Slingerlands. For me, Evans hazy 200 snare sides work as well as Remo clear Diplomat snare sides.

45 years of playing Remo, cant stop now. Not sure if one is "better" than the other so until I find out, Remo is my choice.

First things first, Evans has the ugliest logo out there! I dislike the logo when I see it on others' drums and I would hate seeing the logo on my own drums. The Remo and Aquarian logos are elegant and that aesthetic extends to the heads themselves. The Evans logo looks like clip art from the '90s and their heads look like science projects.

Remos have always done the job I ask of them and I have no interest in finding a new sound. I'm sure Evans makes fine heads but I have no interest in trying them, in large part because of that logo!

I've tried Evans heads when they were already on a kit I just purchased or traded for. The main issue I have with them is the coating coming off and denting, especially on a snare drum. I also agree with The Electric Company, the logo on Remo is classier than Evans. I'm sure that sounds trivial to some, but it's true, Remo are the only heads I'll use.

I can sympathize with the concern over logos. I prefer Remo's logo over Aquarian and Evans. I played Remo for several years, but switched to Aquarian about 14 years ago on the recommendation of a friend (who had also been a Remo player) and because the shop I got my DW kit from didn't have a set of coated Ambassadors when I picked the kit up. They did have a set of Aquarian Texture Coated heads (Ambassador equivalent). I liked them, so I tried and liked many of their other heads...loved a few. Anyway, they changed their logo a few years ago, and I don't like it. So, I tried an Ambassador again and beat the coating off in minutes. Aquarian's coating is as tough as the stuff on the deck of a US Navy ship (my fellow sailors will know what I mean). Anyway, on the recommendation of a forum member, I tried a Vintage Ambassador. It lasted longer, but only a couple weeks. Aquarians last me a year sometimes before I see coating wear off. Evans is as bad, if not worse, than Remo. A floor tom came to me with a coated G2 and it only lasted a few months...and it didn't get played hard or often.

If you're playing clear heads, go with your favorite brand...or logo. I've played them all and I can't knock either of the three companies on tone. Tuned properly, they all sound good. But, if you're playing coated heads, Aquarian has the most durable coating...you just have to get past their huge new, plain-looking logo. Again, I prefer Remo's logo, they just need to toughen up their coating.

Thanks, good info from someone that has tried them all! I've never tried anything Aquarian, but may have to. And really...a little acetone will probably remove anyone's logo that may bother us! :D
