No, i've got no pictures of something rare concerning vintage drums.:D

However, while cleaning up the steel bass drum hoops on my vintage Stewart kick drum that i'm currently restoring, i came across something really weird, and...very annoying.. There is a 2 inch groove on the inside of the hoop, and all around the circumference of that part of the hoop, there are tiny vent holes.. What in the heck are they for ??? I found this out the hard way, after having cleaned them with some SOS pads and rinsed and dried them off, i kept seeing droplets of water coming from an unknown source.. I was like, where in the heck is the water coming from if i've dried up the whole hoop ?? It was driving me nuts ! Then i spotted the culprits. These weird, tiny vent holes on the inside of this weird groove on the hoop. Why on God's green earth would these Japanese drum manufacturers drill holes like that, and what would their intended purpose possibly be ?? I have to say, i'm completely stumped, and also found it quite amusing !!Laughing H. Weird indeed.. Any of you MIJ guys have clue why they did this ?

Curious George is knocking...:D

Its to suspend the hoop from a wire while plating

Steel snare shells also "have holes" for the same reason

Exactly.

Here's something else: Why do metal bass hoops have something loose inside each of them that rattles around when you move the hoop around?

Yeah, I've noticed that. What the hell is that? Is it all the bits of hoop drilled out for the hanging holes and they've fallen inside?

Yes exactly what has been said.... had a set of Pearl wood fibreglass shells in the 70's... (I was actually working for Pearl at the time).. the rattle was driving me insane until I finally bought a pair of wooden hoops for the kit.... There were lots of similar complaints coming in... in particular this was to be a real problem in the recording studios

..

Cheers

John
