Yes, there were Standard kits that came from the factory with Classic lugs. Several theories for it.......Ludwig ran out of the Standard lugs during production...or towards the tail end of production they simply ran out of the lug and did the remaining shells with Classic lugs.....or possibly special ordered. Hard to say for sure.

Thanks for the info, Mike!

Would anybody happen to know whether the tone controls on the Ludwig Standards are in the same configuration as those on their Super Classic kits? Thanks in advance for your help!

Off the top of my head I'm pretty sure the Standards used the small knob version generally. That also saw use on some Acrolites. Not sure if all these were still leftovers from the 50's and early 60's (pre-ball bat) being used up or if they were simply a bit less expensive to make and added to the production savings. The main saving feature of the lugs (according to an interview with Bill Ludwig Jr.) was the smooth design made them easier to polish before plating which meant less labor and lower cost. All these little things add up to allow a lower price overall for the sets.

Ludwig being Ludwig though I'd be about 99.9% sure that at least a few Standards left the factory with the larger knob muffler installed. Maybe lots of them did. I'm pretty sure all mine have the small knob though.
