Vintage MIJ Drum Videos-Post Here

Loading...

Hello fellow MIJ vintage drum fans!

Note: I posted this thread on DFO, I figured I'd put it here as well. There's a lot of vintage MIJ fans on this site that might not be over there.

We often post pictures of our drums, even talk about them. It got me thinking, it would be cool to see more of them in action, whether in solo practice, band rehearsal, at gigs, etc.

I did up some quick videos of my Stewart kit. All of them done fast on my Iphone, using the Imovie app...was fun and easy. The audio is straight from the Iphone, but still gives a decent example of the set.

I hope this might inspire others to post videos in this thread of their own MIJ kits (audio clips welcome as well). After all, drums are meant to be heard...

Cheers!

Here's a cool video of Randy Bachman (The Guess Who, BTO) playing with the band Zeus. The drummer is using a vintage Stewart kit (I'm pretty sure it's a Stewart set, correct me if I'm wrong), sounds awesome imo.

Enjoy.

You've got some really nice round sounds coming out of those drums Trilok. My first set was an MIJ (LaBoz) and it worked just fine. I remember wishing I had the "real thing" like a Gretsch or Ludwig or Rogers. Truth be told, the MIJ's did the job pretty well. It seems they are doing fine on the Randy Bachman video too.

Thanks for the comment Dan. I lucked out and got them from the original owner, he actually owned three of the same kit, in different finishes. I own Gretsch, Luddies, Rogers, etc...truth be told, I just enjoy finding rare gems, fixing them up a bit, and making them sound better than people would expect. Cheers!

Here's a local PBS access show I did with my current band. You can bypass all the lame attempts at comedy (and a completely unrelated artist's videos) to get to our performance, more towards the end. I'm using no badge Tiger Eye or Root Beer Swirl drums (13/16/20) with a B/O Badge Acrolite (that was miked with about 10 gates from the sounds of it, that thing cracks and rings for days on it's own-sounds heavily muffled here but it's not). The drums are the vertical grain Luan with the thicker MIJ shell with no re-rings and gray painted interiors. Ludwig bracket and cymbal arm on the bass drum and I'm using 70's Atlas Cymbal stands.

I have the matching 12" for this kit too (Would love to find a matching snare). The inside of the floor tom is signed by Stanton Moore (got them at the Chicago Drum Show in 2014 where he was a clinician) and the swish underside is signed by Steve Maxwell (got it at his shop at an "after party").

Enjoy!

Another clip of the same band, around the same time frame.

This time they are the round, blue star "Made In Japan" badges. 12/16/20 with 14" matching snare. They are a re-wrap. I know that turquoise sparkle is not an "official" MIJ color, but it just looks so darn cool.

I got them from a fellow forum member on ebay. The floor tom was a double lug. I converted it to a single lug to match the bass and rack. They were originally red sparkle, but I wanted to do something different with them, so that allowed me to plug all the holes and re-wrap the floor tom so it looks single lug and like it came from the factory that way. All matching lugs (Slingerland copy double ended snare type). Again, I find myself using 70's Atlas cymbal stands, with a Ludwig bracket and L-arm on the bass drum.

This was the first gig I got to use them on. I think I literally finished re-assembling them the day before.

(Song title is not nearly as ominous as it seems. It's actually a positive message- Everybody Dies, but not everybody really lives. It's not about the length of time, it's more a question of what you do with it).

Here's a bdp MIJ kit with a Ludwig Rocker snare I use to own, I believe it was a Lido Supreme but I suppose it doesn't make much difference.
