Painting a drum head

Was wondering if any of you have ever repainted a bass drum reso head to give it a fresh new look ?

If so, how does it affect the sound ? I was thinking of spray painting a couple of coats on my

Powerstroke 3 coated head to give it some life and to have as an extra.

As always, all thoughts are appreciated !

I would think that adding more paint to any head is going to make it less responsive/resonant. A graphic is different, the amount of paint you would use doesn't take up a lot of space. Hey, they paint on coated heads, so I would try it. Just don't go heavy. I think the lightest coat possible will clean it up and not affect sound too much. Let us know how it works out.

Works fine. You can take the old coating off with Acetone. I just clean (Bar Keepers Friend) and lightly sand. Then light coats of Krylon white primer.

Thanks Creighton ! I spray painted the head with the same type of primer, only i used Rustoleum.

However i did not remove the old coating. One coat and it seems to have covered it up nicely.

Now it's only a matter of hearing what it sounds like once installed on my bd..

Cheers !

Thanks John ! I did as you recommended and didn't go heavy. One coat

and it slightly took out some resonance, but not much. Kind of like a powerstroke with a felt strip..I will let you guys know how it sounds on the bd..

Cheers !

Instant muffling! Cool! Let us know how it tunes up. I bet it'll sound great with the extra coat acting as muffling.

One shot sign writers paint is very easy one coat stuff very quick dry

April 2nd 1969 scarfed pink champagne holly wood and 65/66 downbeat snare, and , supra same year very minty kit old pies
66/67 downbeat with canister
Super 400 small round knob
1967 super classic obp

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

I have had several Reso heads painted over the years.. no issues other than.. make certain to use an acrylic paint.... early days enamel paint would sometimes crack around the edges when the head was removed/or de tuned......

A painted Reso head on a BD equates to about one piece of Moon Gel... IMO.

Cheers
