Nice work, Tommy! I especially like your floor tom rolls at the end! Cool cymbal work too! My eyes are not the best but, do you hold your sticks in a matched grip? I'm just wondering because from what I've been lead to believe, most jazz and swing drummers use the traditional grip. Just curious. Even though I play rock, I learned the traditional grip many years ago. I try the matched grip occasionally but, it just doesn't feel right for me. Anyway, thanks for giving us all a personal glimpse of you and your talent. Now we can put a face to our "boss" and associate talent with the name! Thank you! Brian
Brian!
That is a question I am asked a lot actually!, because ... generally speaking, this style music is most associated with jazz and drummers using traditional grip. I actually play both as I was taught traditional and only started incorporating matched grip when I was playing "heavier" funk/R&B in the late 70's. So now, depending on what I need to do with the music, I alter my grip. I can play everything with match equal to traditional .. except .. for clean press .. buzz .. and open double stroke rolls. I always switch back to traditional grip for that. Otherwise, I cover most all of it with match. Brushes are the same discipline ... I use both! THANKS for all the comments Brian!
