Actually it would only be the "holy grail" to someone who was looking for that kind of set......Gene Krupa's first set of Radio Kings would be the Holy Grail for others....see where I'm going with this?Would I pay anything more than $3500 for that kit on ebay? No. I'm not looking for one of them, so to me its not worth it, to others....its their wallet....let theirs get lighter...LOL

Holy grail, hmmmm , gotta be 26, 14, 16f, 18f, spare 20f, keystone blonde maple. Anyone here the grail keeper?

Well, I think that if certain Fender Stratocasters can sell for tens of thousands of dollars, today, then why not certain vintage drum sets? Those old Fender guitars were never really "fine" musical instruments, either. Collectors have to have some kind of criteria for their collecting. And, within those criteria, they can assign whatever values they want -same as the people who assign super-inflated prices to those old Strats.

That's a good point, and I always thought that it was funny how slow drums were in getting up to what they're worth. Guitarists valued '56 Strats 25 years ago, but 25 years ago, when a new set of Tama's were a grand (or less) I had my RB's assessed for insurance and they said the set, with 50's K's, was worth max $300. After all, they were old.

It's only in this last decade, and mainly because of the internet, that the value of old drums has got to where I thought it should have been all along, and some listings, like this one, are obviously way over.

Yes, but those vintage strats you speak of that were worth tens of thousands were owned by significant players at one point....Eric Clapton's strats for example went for ludicrous amounts of $$......not just some arbitrary strat on ebay like the drumkit we are all talking about here. Honestly, I think a yellowed tophat and cane wrap kit is a little too busy looking for my taste....same as a Leedy Autograph of the Stars kit....a little too much for my tastes. I wouldn't pay that much for either no matter how rare they are these days because I'm just not that into them. I had the pportunity a couple of years ago to purchase a leftover NOS Ludwig 90th anniversary tophat & cane snare (numbered and everything), a guaranteed future collectible, and I passed on it. I thought it was too gaudy and just couldn't stand to look at it. That same drum was sold on ebay recently by repercussions for a rediculous amount of money. And I know she got it for a song because the family of the friend of mine that owned the drum shop that was going to give me the deal was having basically a firesale on all the inventory after he passed away. Man I miss Joe and his shop.....anyway, I could have made a killing on it if I sat on it for a few years, but I opted not too.

I guess my point is, I didn't care for the reissue and wouldn't pay the killer deal for it then, so there's no way I'd pay the asking price on this kit. If there was one kit I would pay that kind of money for it would be MY Jazzette kit. The one that I should have never let go of, and now would like to have back....I think I've covered that in posts before...lol! To me, THAT KIT is MY Holy Grail.
