I need some help with a Yamaha snare drum

Loading...

I came across a Yamaha SD-755MD snare drum (14 x 5.5). I dont know anything about this drum series other than it has a steel shell. If there's anyone here who knows about this series, I have a couple of questions:

1.When were they made? I think it could be from the 80's or 90's.

2. Were they entry level, mid level or professional drums?

3. How much would it cost in perfect condition? The one Im restoring is VERY pitted. I would like to know how much I could offer to the owner of the drum, if I decide to keep it.

4. Also, the bottom rim is different than most rims. The rectangular space where the wires go thru is wide and extends down beyond the rim. Is it for extended snare wires? If so, which Puresound extended snare wire should I buy for a 14" drum? (I've seen they have 15" wires but I dont know if an extended 14" wire is considered the same as a 15" wire)

Any help on the subject will be much appreciated

The SD-755MD was early 80's and had 10 lugs with a single

tension throw and extended snares. ( a roller mechanism similar

to Tama was used )

This was a professional drum.

If memory serves it would likely have been around $350 - $ 399 street price. ( in 1982 dollars )

Without a photo hard to say, but you might have it powder coated

in a cool color. If you like the sound or are looking to add some metal

to your fleet, realistically I'd offer $75.00 - $100.00 tops.

There was a gate on the snare side for added protection if you

were inclined to set it down on the floor or it rattled around in

the case.

Plain old Gibraltar 20 strand extended should do the trick.

Check out Interstate Music. Around $9.00.

Thanks a lot for the info! Ill be puting some new heads soon to see how it sounds. And also, thanks for the tip about the wires. Ill check them out too. Yesterday I saw a picture of one that's selling in London (around $100 in top condition) however I noticed it was made in China while mine is made in Japan. Maybe that translates into better construction or quality.

chrome plating.
