Burgundy Sparkles

I got this kick, snare and floor tom for $125 in a second hand store in the mid 90's, and they were at a friend's studio until yesterday... almost like Xmas getting them back as I never used the set much. I never had a small tom for the set. The kick is a 20" and the floor tom a 16". The tom mount is MIA as are the hoop inlays.

The kick hoop has a bevel on the head side, kinda hard to see so I made a red line... maybe 30 degrees, I don't remember those on my other set.

You can hardly see the penny I put there to show how wide the head hoop is... the heads are a primitive plastic that looks amazingly calflike... they're very thin and my guess came with the drum although that would make them very old for plastic heads. The red arrow is where it looks like the factory ran a bead of clear caulk:

See those little holes in the head hoop? probably termites and luckily there's no damage to the set I've found:

The snare is pretty:

All the hardware is pitted but not totaled.

Exposed mounting screws on the tom/cym brackets date these early for plastic heads, although who knows if they are indeed original.

Are these aluminum tom legs original? The ones on my other set are chrome with knurled rings... but they do match the bass drum spurs:

The snare badge (there's no inside paper labels on this set):

The felt pads on the mufflers are teardrop shaped whereas on my other set I'm quite sure they're square:

nice drums! they have definitely been living in some high humidity from the looks of that muffler arm and interior screw heads!

Yes, that was the main reason for me getting them back, so they wouldn't get any worse - I keep them in my air conned studio and you need it here on Oahu.

Great set.

My brother's Anniversary set came the same way...no ride tom out of the corner of the biology lab in his med school (formerly a high school). In the late 80s we just bought a champagne sparkle ride tom and made a finish for it from a black wrap base and then put sparkles on and lacquered over it. I laugh about that now but there was so little info about anything even then, I just knew it was a cool set since it was old.

That's a lovely color and too bad in the wrong climate for preservation. Send it to me in Italy and I'll look after her. ;)

The only thing you can do to match up a rack tom would be to but a Gretsch tom and recover it (or have it recovered) in a custom ColorWrap sold by drummaker.com.

You would be able to match the existing drums near perfectly.

The only problem is, there is a 3-sheet minimum order....and you only need about 1/3 of one sheet. So maybe you could go into the purchase with someone else, someone who could use enough of that particular wrap color to do a complete set....

Jamminsam.com used to carry a Gretsch-like burgundy glitter (or sparkle) at times, but I haven't seen it there in a while.

Doesn't "mahalo" mean "garbage can"?

That's what we tell tourists 'cause it says "mahalo" on the trash cans at McDonalds. O-lugs if all you can say is "trash can" we do have a problem!

About the aluminum tom legs on my burgundy sparkles, are they stock?

Also, has anyone else come across the early design plastic heads like on my kick?

What I find odd is that (IF the heads are original) the heads are primitive plastic on these drums (with exposed diamond plate screws and no paper labels) whereas my other set of RB's (no paper labels but concealed diamond plate screws, which should make these later) came with a calf front kick head. I wonder if anybody has any info on when Gretsch started putting plastic heads on their drums.

The hoops on those heads are curious - they made an attempt to make them look like calf heads... the "flesh" hoops are really big, and the fact that critters took an interest suggests that they are a primitive plastic (or something) that had an organic component.

It means "thank you", that's why they have it printed on all the trash cans.

I still watch 5-0. The music's great! A lot of people (no one here I've ever talked to, even drummers) don't know that Johnny Guerin, who was born on Oahu, played the drums on the Hawaii 5-0 theme song. I read that Jaco really liked that song. To me it's between 5-O, the Munsters and Mission Impossible for best all time theme song.

A few years ago I sequenced that song, pretty much note for note, and man does it sound funny when you play it at a slow speed, say at 80 bpm.

There's a cool fill Johnny Guerin does in the tune where he plays a fill and instead of crashing on "1" keeps rolling and crashes on "2".
