So I've had my 1972 Rogers Starlighter IV (22.13.16) for about 5 years. Until recently I had a pillow inside the bass drum and then I read that putting things inside a bass drum kills the resonance and cut of the drum, so I took it out. Completely wide open this drum sounds ridiculously resonant, undefined and midrangey. I tried a reso head with a hole and it sounded fairly hollow and flat. I've now got a felt strip on each skin and its the best its been but still a bit too much of everything (and the very boomy bass gives me a bit of a headache).
How do you fellow Rogers players here mute your bass drums? what would people have done back in the day when my kit had come out?
Oh I've got a coated Emperor on the batter and coated Ambassador on the reso.
cheers!
