I just acquired these Blaemire toms - 12x10 and 12x8. I also have the hoops. What do I have here? Would you remove the wrap and sand them to the natural fiberglass finish? Cut them (blasphemy?) to a more practical depth? Thanks!
Wow nice find.
But Check This Out!
I have actually gone into the future..................
and stripped, sanded and clear-coated 1 of your drums.
The 12X10.
And here is what it looks like.
Thanks to Mr. Jerry Jenkins
I did not go into the future:
I happen to have a 12x10 that I purchased.
Restored it just to see the long tube.
I thought it might be the only one.
But it is not. You got 1 too.
Back in the old days we used to think longer tubes were better.
Probably just because they were cooler looking at the time.
We did not know what we were doing.
So guys could order almost any size they wanted from Al.
My toms were square and I did cut them down.
IMHO: It would be OK to cut these down as they are just way too deep to be double headed drums.
But as concert toms,......they might be great.
Back in the day, a lot of guys would get Blaemire 8 and a 10 concert toms and put them over the hat.
You can make a great 10" snare with the cut off.
Thanks to Mr. Jerry Jenkins
How does your 12x10 sound? Looks like yours also has Pearl-style lugs. Small world.
Nice find PeterK! I've got one single concert Blaemire tom. Haven't decided which way to go on mine(wrap) either. Mine is a baby though. 5.5"x8. Ludwig mount. Can you guys tell me the make of the lugs on mine?
Mr. Layton, The lugs appear to be Gretsch.
Peter, as I remember it sounded like a normal tom but,
the sympathetic resonance between top and bottom heads was not quite right.
I don't play that one much.
I have a 10x10 Blaemire that sounds great that I use on my kit.
Yep, Pearl Coffin lugs were installed on a lot of Blaemires.
Thanks to Mr. Jerry Jenkins
Peter, where did you find your Blaemire toms?
Thanks to Mr. Jerry Jenkins
It was given to my buddy for free by someone who used them years ago and they were just sitting in his garage. He saw my buddy loading his guitars and though he might be able to find a home for them. My buddy has the uncanny ability for attracting free stuff. That's about all I know. We are in Southern California so it makes sense that it even existed here.
Thank for the info guys. Didn't mean to hijack.
Mike
