I am searching for advice on how to identify the make of my drum set. I was always told it was a Slingerland, but there are no badges or other identifying marks. There is an oblong (sideways) mark on the floor tom that might have been a badge at one point. It's circa late 1960s to early 1970s. I've had the set since the mid-70s. I would say that it is not Slingerland, or any american made drum set. More than likely, you have a "Made in Japan kit". Those can be really cool drums but not too valuable.
Yes agreed... cannot see anything Slingerland there... Still worth keeping though...

MIJ - not much value, but like the guys said, still some great drums especially from the 60's. Enjoy them, but don't expect to make a killing if you sell them.

Agree with the above posters. If you want to know what make and year re-post in the "Vintage non-USA" section. The members over there can tell you what it is. I think those tone control knobs are going to narrow it down.

Back in the day, before Made in Japan became a hallmark for quality, Japan exported lots of inexpensive drums and guitars that were visual knockoffs of premier American brands. They were not marketed as the real thing. Based on my experience with a number of these kits back in the'60s, the wraps were not as good as the real thing. and the shells made from inferior wood were often out of round with occasional flat spots. The hardware, while made to look like the real thing from a distance did not hold up after closer inspection. Enjoy them, but they have very little, if any resale value.
Since most of the emphasis has been on monetary value or perceived quality, I'll just venture to state it's probably a circa 1968 Pearl Thunder-King set.Look on the VDG on this web site.The tom mounts have been replaced with later Tama mounts.
Thanks to all for the comments. Makes sense. The comment on the Tama connection looks on as well. Not so interested in resale value as figuring out what I have. These drums have seen a lot of bar stages over the years.
