MIJ Wrap Finishes-Let's Rank 'Em-Popular To Rare

Loading...

I thought it would be fun to start a thread on MIJ finishes. I don't know that I've ever seen an Lacquered MIJ finish (at least from the factory), although they may well exist. For the purposes of this thread, I am talking about just the "Stencil" MIJ drums (including Pearl and Star, but not including Yamaha, which I know had lots of uncommon wraps).

I thought this would be a good way to get opinions on what the most common were, and some of the most rare, even for us to chime in on a finish not yet included in this thread.

I'll start. I'm listing from what I think is the most common to the least common. As an aside, I think almost all sparkles were actually glitter finishes, at least by today's standards. It seems the MIJ sparkle wraps reflect light a bit more brilliantly than modern sparkles do. Feel free to rank them in your order of opinion:

1. Red Sparkle (toss up with Blue)

2. Blue Sparkle (toss up with Red)

3. Orange/Gold Sparkle

4. Black Diamond Pearl

5. White/Silver Sparkle

6. White Marine Pearl

(From here down I consider these in "Uncommon" territory, so this isn't really a ranking order, just a listing of all the "uncommon" wraps I have seen, either in photos or in person. Feel free to add your own).

-Tiger Eye Pearl/Root Beer Swirl

-Gold Onyx/Gold Agate Pearl

-Blue Onyx/Blue Agate Pearl

-Blue Pearl

-White Satin Flame

-Blue Satin Flame

I know there are many others I have seen, but I can't think of them right now.

What say you?

This Pearl that I own has a wrap that I don't see often. '68 Pearl catalog lists it as Sun Set.

Both of my Majestics have featured rare wraps - at least for vintage MIJ.

1) Grey Shimmer (is what Premier calls it). I do not see this in any Star catalog. It MAY be the "Silky White" as seen in the 1972 catalog, but I am not sure.

2) Oyster Pearl - yes, this is in the Star catalogs, but rarely seen in person (my experience at least).

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!

Beautiful stuff John. Really like those. The Majestic badge has always been one of my favorites.

Vintage Drum Guide has a pic of a really cool Green Agate/Onyx cocktail kit from one of the Star catalogs, and i would imagine that finish is beyond rare, and another finish called "Coal Black Pearl" on their "finish swatch"..
