Identify Eight Rides, Blind!

Loading...

We often "hear" with our eyes or with our preconceptions, so here's a sound file of eight different ride cymbals to see if you can identify them blind. The only hint is that seven are vintage and one is modern. Each cymbal is played with a Bolero stick, same mic/preamp, same mic distance, same room, generally same dynamic level, no compression or effects. Each is featured with a spang-a-lang in mid-field, shoulder shanks in mid-field, soft edge crashes, bell with tip, bell with shoulder, then a final vertical edge chime.

Feel free to guess one, two, three, all, whatever, though I'd love for you to place a guess for all of them. Also, let me know your two favorites!

Very interesting post!

Please understand, this is a great post and I am glad and thankful that you took the time to do this, so I am no criticizing at all, just making suggestions. The way you chose to play each cymbal makes it difficult to really hear their true tones. For me, more space is needed in letting the tip of the stick "ride" sound; they need to sustain much longer. Also, crashing full on would be helpful too. Sticking the bell with the tip of the stick and hitting the edge of the cymbal with the shaft of the stick is not helpful to me. It's hard to get a true essence of what each cymbal is.

The only two I'm willing to guess right now is #2 sounds like an old Zildjian "Pang" from the 70's or 80's.

Is number 5 a older brass cymbal? It has that brassier tone and is dry, controlled and not very loud, all characteristics of brass cymbals.

I listened to the sound clip twice, and didn't hear any cymbal I personally liked, but that's just me.

Thanks again for doing this!

The first is 21 inch medium avedis 60 's

Thev2nd is 22 in avedis late big block 50's heavy

I have not listen to rest yet

April 2nd 1969 scarfed pink champagne holly wood and 65/66 downbeat snare, and , supra same year very minty kit old pies
66/67 downbeat with canister
Super 400 small round knob
1967 super classic obp

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

Very cool post! To me cymbal #2 sounds like a 70's A Zild 20" Pang. I have one that sounds very much the same. Just a guess. I'll leave this to the more seasoned ears. #2 and 3 are my favs. Will be fun to see what they are. #1 a bit like 20" Medium A zild ride. #3 A Zild Rock 21" or 20" heavy A Zild ride.

Is this the order you played them in on the clip, or do you still want us to match them up with the choices given? Didn't know they made Swishes as far back as the 50's. I've never seen one.
