"Modern Vintage" Downbeats Project

Loading...

So, I scored a set of Ludwig Accent "Fuse" for a good deal. A great candidate for a "Modern Vintage" set of downbeats.

The bass and rack tom shells are cut down to 14" and 8" depth respectively. All bearing edges were re-cut to 45 degree insides and roundover outside with the peak in the center.

I had a Gretsch suspension mount for a 6-lug 12" laying around. By drilling an additional hole in the mounting plate the Accent tom mount bracket could be bolted to it.

The whole shebang is wrapped in Flying Walopus Abalone http://walopus.com/product/flying-walopus-abalone-drum-wrap

Somehow the combination of these sizes and the bearing edges yields very consistent results. Deep, tight and punchy. Seems to work out on just about any shell type. I've tried the same combo on maple, mahogany, birch, poplar.... always sounds great.
