I've got a line on a rather nice Gretsch snare, and was hoping for some advise regarding fair market value. So far, all I've got is this pic - obviously, the strainer throw-off lever is broken. As I've got virtually no experience with vintage Gretsch, I'm also hoping for some guidance as far as what to watch out for. So guys...what do you think? Thanks!
Gretsch RB snare drum
That's the same snare I've had for 35+ years.
They're great snares... a nice low "chuck" sound for rock stuff and great in a jazz combo.
I mean you're talking about a snare that so many giants used that what can you say?
I don't know anything that ever happens to them except the chrome pits and that one looks pretty good but not perfect in that department.
The snare lever may be a bit tricky to find at any kind of good price. It screws in so you could probably rig something until you luck upon the right one. That should make the price go down some in your favor.
It's got the place for the snap in key and those I've seen on eBay - they made them long after RB's... maybe they still do.
Bonus points if it has the original "Responso" snares in good shape!

Not sure if you're still on the fence about this, but:
I've got a RB snare that I've never really loved. I'm told many people have trouble with them -- Gretsch is said to have been less than consistent in how they cut their edges and snare beds back in the day. I have trouble getting any decent snare sensitivity out of mine, though I'm sure I could solve the problem by having the beds re-cut. That said, some people love the sound. Definitely a warm, woody drum.
As for the throw-off arm, I believe Precision Drum sells a replica throw-off arm for about $20.
Good luck!
