Difference in Lugs?

Loading...

I've yet to come across anyone's reasoning behind this, so I'm guessing there is none... but why do people label ads for Ludwig classic lugs as being specifically bass drum or tom lugs? I'm assuming it's to catch the eye of someone who's looking to outfit a specific shell, and has nothing to do with the lug itself.

Same thing with stands. They're never just selling an early '70s Atlas snare stand, it's an early '70s Atlas Vistalite snare stand.

There's not really any difference between this stuff, right? It's just like including Bonham in an ad for an LM402, or a 18x16 floor tom.

With bass drum lugs sometimes they are different as they have to be higher to have the correct alignment, I cant remember if this applies to Ludwig though. With the snare stand though they can attract more hits if they add words like Vistalite.

Hi Zach!

I think you're correct about this. In regards to Ludwig lugs, there are only two kinds; large and small. The large Classic lug is for bass drums, floor toms and most rack toms larger than 12". The small Classic lug is usually for 12" toms. Now, keep in mind that we're talking about lugs for the majority of vintage Ludwig drums, correct? Eventually, Ludwig began installing the larger lug on all bass and toms.

As to stands, yes, I've seen the same thing! No such thing as an Atlas Vistalite snare stand! When it comes to vintage hi hat stands, everyone loves calling them the "Spurloc" stand. This is incorrect! Spurloc simply refers to the built-in lock that you fold down on the pedal, and was included in the many of the vintage hi hat stands we're used to seeing. The Atlas hi hat included the Spurloc footboard!

Also keep in mind that currently Ludwig usually uses the small version of the lug on all drums in a set (including bass drums) although you can specify the larger lugs at a slight upcharge.

If you look at a typical Ludwig 60's or 70's five piece set you can see the two sizes side by side as the 12" tom has the small lugs and the 13" has the larger ones. Marching drums and concert toms also usually had the small lugs regardless of the overall size of the drum.
