Funny Story: "Hey Bun E.!"

Loading...

Today I was going through some older pics of my dad from the late 80's-early 90's which reminded me of a story he once told me. Seems that back then he had a passing resemblance to one Mr Bun E. Carlos, so much so that one night at a gig someone asked him: "Hey Bun E.! What are you doing playing with THESE guys??"

He got a kick out of it and said to them: "Just sitting in with some friends of mine." He played it up. ;) I guess the WMP Ludwig kit he was playing at the time helped with the mistaken identity as well. Everybody remembers a similar kit from a Cheap Trick video (Don't Be Cruel, I think was the video in question) and there you go. Bun E. helping out some friends. LoLoLoLo

So, here's a couple of pics of dad on the kit in question with his band, Little Jimmy & the Homewreckers (a local Boston area blues band) from back in the day. Lets see if anyone else sees the resemblance. I didn't really see it then, but maybe......

BTW, Bun E., if you read this post (I know you are a regular member here) I hope you get a kick out of it as much as my dad did then. :)

I'm sure you get confused with "Milk n' Cookies" (dad's nickname) all the time ;)

BTW, thought I'd mention, I still have his last kit, that WMP kit in the story. Thought I'd post a couple of pics of it as it is today. Not really vintage mind you, as it is from the late 1980's, but still.....

Cool story. I remember seeing Bun's kit like that.

There might be a some resemblance. If he was smoking a cigarette while playing he'd be spot-on.

Yeah, maybe. My dad never smoked a day in his life though. ;)

Someone brought this link to my attention.......

http://donnbennett.com/drums/bun-e-carlos-ludwig-cheap-trick-set/

Now I realize the sizes of the drums & the size of the kit are way off compared to my dad's kit, but you could probably see where the guy who said "Hey Bun E.!" was coming from......he paid enough attention to the finish of the kit and the fact that they were Ludwig and my dad had a slight resemblance to Bun E.

BTW, dad told me he wanted this kit at the time because he wanted a change (he played Black Panther finish for years, hence my affinity towards that finish) "and besides, that's the finish Buddy Rick & Gene Krupa played" was his main reasoning. x-mas3

A friend once called me up to sit in on "Surrender" and introduced me as Bun E. A few people fell for it although I upset him later when people asked for autographs and I spilled the beans.

That is funny! BunE might not think so, but your dad was a dead ringer for him at one time! Thanks for sharing the photos. I especially like the tribute drum head. Your dad would have approved of the message. :D

Too many great drums to list here!

I've never met Bun E. in person, just seen some of his posts on here. But I'd like to think he has a good sense of humor and may still get a kick out of the story. Jumping2

Glad you like the tribute head. I had it commissioned after he passed. His band was supposed to play their regular club that they play on NYE that year. Unfortunately, he passed in November that year and never got to play that NYE gig. The rest of the guys decided to play it anyway, thinking that's the way he would have wanted it, and he would have. I brought his kit down and set it up fitted with that bass head. They invited various drummer friends of his to play that night "sitting in" on his kit. At the end of the night I took the head off the bass drum and gave it to the club owner, a close personal and longtime friend of his. It hangs on the wall behind the stage at that club to this day.

Yeah, you gotta let them off the hook eventually. Like Wilfred Brimley used to say "Its the right thing to do". LOL! Funny Post
