My very first ride - Paiste 22" 2002 Heavy Ride

Loading...

So I've had this ride roughly 20 years now. Was my very first ride cymbal and one I always plan to keep, just a great cymbal. Got this used for $89 at my local Sam Ash. I'll never forget how badly my at the time drum teacher wanted this cymbal from me. Even offered me $100 and his ride ( forget what he had, might have been an '80s Sabian ) thankfully I refused because years later he sold his gear to fund his habits, this would have been gone along with. Decided the other night to see if I could date this bad boy. Thankfully because of the serial number I was able to place it at around 1988. It was right after they stopped stamping the model number along with the company name ( PAISTE 2002 simply became PAISTE ) and it's right before they changed the style of how they wrote the name in 1990 pAiStE ( or something to that effect ) And aside from a little tape residue on the back from the previous owner ( never got around to cleaning it off,lol ) this sucker is practically new. Even the ink isn't faded.

Awesome story and great that you still have it. Looks like brand new too. Good for you!

Was chatting with Zenstat awhile back and realized that I too still have my first ride cymbal that I ever purchased, vintage Avedis 20".

It's awesome to have what you first started with. Still have my first set of hats as well, though the top is cracked beyond. Set of Paiste 14" 200's got free from a friend. Lasted me a couple years. One day I'll find another top though.

So am I actually. There was a number of years from when I was 17 until my mind '20s where I just never used this cymbal and actually didn't like the sound. Then again most of what I was doing on a ride just didn't transpose well to this particular cymbal. But as I got older I fell back in love. Not my main ride by any means ( very unforgiving if you crash it ) but always ready to be used when the call is made.

It's kinda strange how it works but I have had cymbals (and drums) that I I haven't particularly liked when I first got them but have grown to appreciate the sound. Also, some cymbals record better or sound better miked than they do just hearing acoustically...alot of the overtones aren't heard as prominently.

I think for me, is that for a while I was doing a lot of bounce work on the ride, and this one isn't built for that style of playing, so it never gave me the response I wanted. Where as my B8 ( now long gone ) always did. Truthfully I played that dang B8 so much it was silly. That was my main ride for a number of years. Every practice, every show. Thing actually changed a little bit sonically as the years went by. At the moment I have three. This gem, a '70s Zildjian 22" Light Ride ( loves to be crashed and give a nice wash ) and a 20" AAX Stage Ride. Another great ride, but great for bounce work. Also the brightest of the three.
