Slingerland set on craigslist?

Loading...

Hello everybody. I used to be a drummer but after a couple of years I moved to guitar. I sold my drum set. It has been about 5 years and I have been wanting to start playing the drums again. Now, I was just looking for some good deals on craigslist and I came across this one.

The ad reads

Drum set vintage 1961 sligerland 5 piece drum set with some symbols excellent for beginners or novice great sound! $250.00 firm

I was shocked when I read this so I called the guy up. He says it got it from a buddy of his who played jazz in the area. He had a studio and got a new set so his buddy sold it to him. He said it comes with hi-hats/stands and it is a black kit.

I know slingerlands are quality drums so I am ready to buy this if it is legitimate. I am going over there tomorrow with my friend who knows a lot more about drums than I do, and if it is good I am going to buy it.

Basically I am wondering if I just found a great deal and what I should look for when I check the set out?

Thanks alot,

Nick

Well, if it IS a '61 kit and it hasn't been mistreated over the years, then it should be worth more than $250. The cymbals (not "symbols") might be interesting. You should look for anything that says "Zildjian" or "Paiste" in that regard. However, there are lots and lots of "What ifs?" that could affect the value of the drums. Pictures are very, very helpful -almost essential in most cases, to determine what they might be worth. But, hey, $250 may be worth the gamble. It's difficult to say without seeing it, first.

I spoke with the guy selling these, and all is not as advertised. Badge is silver and black - definitely NOT 1961. Bottom hoops and tension rods missing. Still in all, maybe not a bad deal. No pics, as they are being stored at his ex-wife's house. Gee - maybe you could even get caught up in a domestic dispute! As previously mentioned - cymbals could be the deciding factor. If you're close enough, they're probably worth checking out. As for me, a bit to much of a drive considering the gamble.
