Gretsch tom won't take modern heads

Loading...

I have a wonderful 8 inch Gretsch tom that has a natural finish shell. The Problem is the shell is exactly 8 inches in diameter and current drum heads fit very tight. And here's the big problem, I want to wrap the shell with vintage gold sparkle, but that will make the drum heads fit too snug and almost impossible to put on. Is there a vintage drum head available that is a little bigger in diameter that will solve this problem? Please email me any replies, I sometimes forget to check the forum for answers. Could you not leave a bit of the shell showing on both top and bottom while wrapping? You don't have to glue the wrap right up to the top and bottom of the shell. Perhaps just leave 1/4 inch or so from top and bottom. The heads will cover the exposed shell anyway. Just an idea.

I agree with Salty..Leave some space between the edges and the heads will cover it..

I would go with Evans Level 360, which are supposed to fit ALL vintage drums and edges..

If the drum is way out, Remo will make heads to any size.

I think you're right on, sir! I never thought to mention particular heads. Good advice!!!

Yeah, what heads are you using?? I find Aquarian to be a slightly snugger fit than Remo/Evans, at least as far as Pearl drums are concerned.

Some good suggestions. I tried the standard Evans and Remo heads, and they wouldn't fit. I was told by MusiciansFriend that the Aquarian vintage drumhead is made for the older vintage drums. I'm assuming that the Aquarian head mentioned by russticles is a standard size head. So maybe I'll try the Aquarian vintage. Someone mentioned that carefully cutting the aluminum ring of the head in 4 even spaces will also work. By the way, I going to wrap the kit with vintage gold sparkle. I'm also looking for a 18" diameter shell, either 12" or 14" depth to use as a bass drum with this kit. It doesn't have to be any particular brand, just good quality. I have the hardware for the shell.

Thanks guys for your help and support

Aquarian American Vintage heads smallest size is 12" and Modern Vintage is 10". So unless Evans or Remo vintage-style heads come in 8", the suggestion of trimming the wrap is probably the way to go. Good luck!

My 40s Slingerland doesn't like them. They actually seem to be worse than Remos somehow... Maybe the collar is stiffer or something but it's easier to get Ambs/Emps on and off compared to the 360 G2s I tried and the Evans seem boxier when tuned.

I've just received an American Vintage Medium for my 13" and while I haven't had time to really play with it yet it seems much better. Appears to have a lower profile, I could only just get the tension rods to thread into the lug when putting the head on, but it feels less choked after tuning it up a bit. I'm going to get myself a 16" to try and if that's good I'll follow up with another 13" and 16" for the bottom and a pair of 26" heads.
