Vintage 196? MIJ Pearl Kit

Loading...

First time poster. I took about a $90 US ($125 CAN) plunge the other day and picked up what I believe are a set of mid-60s made in Japan Pearl drums in Tiger's Eye. I learned all this from reading your posts :) I know nothing about drums (I'm a guitarist) but the price was right and I was mesmerized by the wrap. The kit came complete with original Japan-stamped cymbals. The only thing missing was the front bass drum skin.

This weekend's project will be to get them all cleaned up.

Hi JethroTech... and Welcome to the forum!

You got a good deal on a cool kit! I believe this is a 1967-68 Valencia outfit. Check this link to take you to the 1968 Pearl catalog... http://www.drumarchive.com/Pearl/

Just click the link for the 1968 catalog, which will display as a PDF.

Thanks, Mark. The Valencia looks like the one for sure although I think somewhere along the line someone may have moved the bass drum cymbal arm on my kit to the front/centre of the bass.

Thanks for the info--it's much appreciated!

Very nice find !. Tiger's Eye Pearl - (a.k.a.Root Beer Swirl) is a highly collectable MIJ drum set finish on any kit, let alone an original Pearl from the early years of production.

Those tubs will sound awesome once you get some nice fresh heads on them.

The $125 price can't be beat ! Cool !

I just can't wait until I have some free time to get them all cleaned up. It might have to be a winter project. Summer is too short up here and I need to make the most of being outdoors :)

Super cool find! I have a partial set in Tiger Eye... so pretty to just look at... and fun to whack. You did very well.

As a guitar player myself, I will warn you now... RUN! Drums are much more addictive and take up more room than guitars. "Just say 'NO' to drums." LoLoLoLo

Wanted: Pearl President floor tom in Golden Grain wrap and rack tom in Tiger Eye (root beer) wrap.

OMG! Those are hard to find - and for $90????

Just say NO to Steel Wool. That could make your story tragic.

Congrats! Make sure the edges are good/true, tune to the shell, and it will bless you with great sound. I have videos to prove it (recorded with the same drums pretty much , just different # of lugs).

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!

I recently came into the same floor tom that had been painted over. Absolutely stunning finish and great deal on the kit. That's a great buy, and the kit looks to be in great shape.
