Remo Ambassador Options

Loading...

I have a late 60's Star kit (12" and 14" toms 20" kick). I am looking to get all new heads for it. I originally was going to put Remo Ambassadors on but I seem to have problems with the coating coming off. I want a white or coated style head, single ply, batter and reso. I play mostly jazz, light rock, folk type stuff.

Has anyone had experience with the Remo Suede series? What is the difference between the suede and white suede? Would I be better off going with a different brand (Evans Coated G1)?

Any suggestions?

Thank you!

I've had good luck with Aquarian Classic Coated heads in the past. Same weight as an ambassador head, but with a better coating. I find they have a slightly better sound as well.....but that is a subjective thing.

The Evans G1 360's are a great head, also, the white coating last longer than Remos will. The Attack white coated heads are great also.

It's interesting how different people's experiences are with coated Remos. I'm a very heavy hitter and I've played coated Emperors and Ambassadors for years without any problems. Then there are guys who rarely lay into their drums and their coating peels like a sunburn.

Same here, cant recall having problems with them in 50 years. In fact in the 70-80,s I found playing the same heads as long as possible was giving me the sound I needed back then. I still change heads sparingly, unless you crack one openLoLoLoLo

On my Stewart Peacock set, I use Evans G2 coated for batters and G1 coated for reso`s...Excellent quality heads indeed!! I wouldn`t say that I`m the heaviest of hitters, but, I`m no slouch either and these heads hardly show wear...

Cheers

The 70's and 80's remo coating is not the same remo coating of today. I 'm a heavy hitter But I also always hit in the same spot, I can wear the coating on a remo emperor in 30 minutes of playing now, The old Remos of old I never wore the coating out.

Hmmm weird I never have a problem with the coating on Ambassadors . That is all I use or like . These are the regular Ambassadors not the Vintage Ambassador line btw .

Warning ... Avoid member statuscymbal here, vintage_collector on DFO , and americanpatriot10 on eBay. Email me for his name. All are the same shady guy who has burned me and a list of other members on both boards . He is also selling on Facebook too ..

Yes exactly.... I've not had the same problem with the A's or X's.. but the standard Ambassadors are not the same...

Thanks for all your feedback. I have been an Evans guy through and through but really wanted to try Remo this time for this specific kit. I have had Remo Ambassadors on my Acrolite in the past that would flake and wear very quickly where the Evans Coated G1's and G2's I have not struggled with. Here is what I am thinking I will try:

Toms: Remo Suede for batter and Coated Ambassador for reso

Kick: Remo Coated PS3 for batter and Coated Ambassador with felt strip for reso

I ordered a 14" suede head from CME so I can see how it sounds on my snare and floor tom. Not sure if I will like it or not. It is hard to find info/experience/reviews on the suede series head.
