Chick Webb, the drummer Buddy Rich would say was his hero. Four feet tall. Died at 34 in 1939 when Buddy was 21. Had turberculosis of the spine and could hardly walk. Adopted Ella Fitzgerald to give her a better life.

I don't know if he was standing in this promo shot:

The Jacksons had cymbal stands like this on one tour:

Check out the cymbal mount:

One of these went for $710 on Ebay awhile ago:

Sonny Greer worked I think with Leedy and used a similar set.

He looks a lot like Pee Wee in this one (good shot of the cymbal):

I always wondered where Chick's set is.

Also, did Billy Gladstone rig some sort of pedal setup so that the kick pedal was elevated so the could sit high on the set? The kick could hit more in the middle.

His life would make an incredible movie.

I read somewhere once that the console was actually a Premier console. I think it was "The Drum Book", but not 100% sure. Cool pics....as to the whereabouts.......I'd like to know too.....it would make a great movie, better than the Gene Krupa story I think.....

Has anyone thought to check out the Hauptmann house?

I just did a search for Hauptmann house and didn't find much. What/where is it? I found a bunch of stuff on the Lindbergh kidnapping.

Here's Sonny Greer's setup:

Kind of a pre - Carl Palmer.

Interesting Ludwig-dude re the Premier connection - I'd not heard that.

That era when he was playing in the house band at the Savoy Ballroom was to me, one of, if not THE, highest points in class and musical achievement. Probably the best gig of all time.

Chick is credited as one of the writers of "Stompin' At the Savoy" - an important tune for me. When I was 13 my Dad took me to a jazz club and I sat next to Teddy Wilson for two sets - changed my life and was THE piano lesson of my life. That was the first time I heard "Stompin' At the Savoy". I think about his elegance every time I play - the highest level of touch I've ever experienced. That's what I see in the cream of the cream of the crop players is that they have exquisite touch like a ballet dancer. Steve Gadd was like that when I saw him too - over-the-top beauty in his hands.
