Thats a Ludwig snare lug that someone has MODIFIED into a strainer of some sorts.....interesting idea....but with the cost of a P-85 so cheap it makes me wonder why anyone would bother to dstroy a perfectly good lug like that? Were thay that bored or cheap? DOH

I don't think it's a modified Ludwig-lug. This "strainer/lug" is more round at the edges.

Also the cut in the midle is to clean, it does not look DIY to me.

It's very innovative, whatever the origin. What does the butt plate look like? Is it of similar design? It does look very Lugwig-ish, but looking closely, I have to agree with you, it looks very well made, rather than done by some hack in the basement with a dremel tool and a 6pack....Cool1

I'm telling you it IS a MODIFIED LUG....it may have been "professionally" done, but it is not a strainer....look at the rest of it.....a j-hook with a turnbuckle nut and a knurled nut in the middle? Its a modified snare lug. Look at the pics again....it was not a Ludwig factory piece thats for sure....something somebody had a lot of spare time to come up with thats for sure....Eye Ball

Notorious for injuries to a drummers' ring finger when engaging the mechanism.

Said drummer would get his Aardvark Legioneers' Club ring "hooked" on the "J", and through the natural reaction of shaking his finger to become "unhooked" cause himself sometimes severe knuckle damage.

After losing several drummers to these career-ending injuries, the Model 4U2P was discontinued. Most known existing examples were smelted out of existence in a ceremonial purging at the Chelsea Hotel back in '72. This one looks to be in good+ condition, and is an impossibly rare find, perhaps even the only known example to surface in the past 15 years or so.

I would keep it, but never use it.... it's just too risky.

I agree on it not being a ludwig factory part but I don't think it is a modified ludwig lug. Look at he pictures below. If it's a DIY modification it's very well done and they even re-chromed it (so I don't think so). Still believe it's some kind of a strainer.

There is no buttplate, I got it with a Premier-snare. I think the former owner just put it there because it is shiny like the rest of the hardware on that drum!!
