I was wondering what your opinions were on early 70's 3-ply Slingerland vs. early 70's 3-ply Ludwig. What are some differences? Which do you like better and why?

Great era for both companies. I love and have both companies drums from that time, It really comes down to hardware at that time. I think ludwig had a little better hardware then,

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!

I think too that Ludwig changed their company for the times. They kept up with the modern trends, where I feel Slingerland lacked a bit. Especially once the company was sold out of the family. But owning both, I love both for different reasons. Can't say I like either better, as with all drums ( to me anyway ) they do have their own charm and tone. I've always found Slingerland drums a bit warmer due to rounded edges and Ludwigs a bit sharper, more cut on them.

+1 for both. Ludwig cymbal stands were definitely superior and when Slingerland answered with Magnum hardware, it was ridiculously over-engineered (who really needs an 8-foot cymbal stand?). But Slingerland's Dynamo HH stand is a magnificent piece of work.

Yea I never understood the crazy high stands of the day. I have a '70s Atlas boom and my god, the thing goes at least 7 feet high ( maybe a tad more?? ) I don't think on any kit I've ever had set-up, and back in the day I sat high ( like throne top on a boom stand bottom ) high, and my cymbals never were taller than me when I stood up. And I'm average 5'11". But I still have my first Hi-hat stand which is an a '70s Atlas. Things works as great as ever.
