All this talk about mighty lugs has me thinking I should take my SS snare apart and do a inspection but I'm guessing if I don't hear things rattling around then I'm probably in the clear?

I have had two Tama snares that originally came Mighty lugs that I replaced with tube lugs, one I sold, the other I still have. Neither of which had lug imprints on the shell and both of which look great. The reason I mention this is because of my past obsession with these drums, buying as many as I could come across to build solid drums. I can say that the part they failed consistently on these snares was the lug, I think that is obvious.

So as time goes on and and the pool of good mighty lugs dwindles I think it is good to have some options to keep these great snares rolling.

Without taking all of my lugs off, what would be a tell tale sign that a mighty lug was failing, or do they just break before any signs?

Taking the lug off is obviously the best way but besides that the ends of the lugs should be equidistance from the bearing edge, so you could measure that. In my experience the tension rods don't even need to be over tightened. All you need is a descrepancy in the tightening, say a med-low reso with a medium-high batter then if the snare sits for a considerable period the lug mount will flow like lava but stay intact.

Mine weren't overly tight when I checked last night but I normally run tight on reso and tighter on batter. I loosened everything up last night. I also have a 30's Gretsch Broadkaster snare that I needed to do a simple insert fix on and the thread posts for the lug mounts looked great on a snare that's been under bolt tensioning for over 70 years!

This whole mounting screw sag thing has me worried now on everything I have :/

I have been in back and forth negotiations with the eBay seller offering the 7 mighty lugs

He was pretty darned firm on his price but did early on reduce the price by 10.00

This morning I was just about to pull the trigger for them

but thought to ask about the mounting posts first

he replied to me that although in his opinion the lugs are still useable

they all have slight distortions on those mounting posts

I was watching that auction too Kenwood. I think that is an interesting commentary on the seller, the mount holes are clearly distorted in the photos yet he does not mention it in the description then when pressed admits to the distortion. I can't make a call on this one besides saying that clean Mighty lugs are hard to find and as we've seen sellers will often try to pass them off as clean when the are not. If you do buy these I would mount them on your snare so that the tighter head pulls them back the other way then perhaps they would be a good candidate for the reinforcing project you wanted to try. Seems to me that a center fin is need for the length of the lug, from end to end bracing the lugs as well a clean application of JB Weld.

As far as I am aware I have no issue with lugs on my 6.5 Rosewood , I am now reluctant to pull it apart and it is & has always had low tuning on both heads. I am wondering if those end holes (at the extreme ends of the lugs) could be utilized to take an additional (short) mounting screw..

Anyone else considered that?? would involve extra holes but may be an option for some??
