Tama Superstar 6.5x14 birch Mastercraft snare drum in cherry wine

Loading...

Hello Mark Thanks for the reply

I am looking into gathering a small surplus of these lugs

as I would like to experiment with them as I mentioned above

if some of you out there could weigh in on my idea that would be great

Something about buying over priced second hand replacement lugs

simply because they fail left and right hence the need to stock-pile them

Makes me want to try and find an effective way to prevent the failure

Tama made a beautiful drum with lugs that render it unusable in many cases

From Kenwood

Hello NacciI just missed out on buying five on the bay for 61.00

I don't think you missed out, I watched those five also. The seller was very slick how he worded the description. If you take a look at this photo from the auction you can clearly see that those lug holes are deformed.

Hello Eric,

You are correct the drum was bought from a fellow in Portland OR

at the time of our negotiations there had been another identical snare drum

by a seller called "portlanddrums" or something thereabouts that was sold

that one went for four hundred and change and had no mis-matched lugs

I was sure due to the location and timing and similar cherry wine drums that they were both the same seller

But my guy swore that he and the other guy in Portland were two separate sellers

In any event, I agree I dislike the practice of taking a full drum kit and selling it off piece by piece for higher profits

...I am not saying that a person is not entitled to do it

Just that I am the opposite of that person and sometimes as a buyer, like in this case,

I am also the unfortunate counterpart to this type of seller

I started with an orphaned 24" cherry wine bass that was 100% complete

It came to me in a small assortment of drums and hardware I bought for only 25.00

The bass drum sat around for two years looking nice and needing an adoptive family of toms

back in the early spring there was a young lady locally

selling an 18" cherry wine floor tom with a fiber case for one hundred dollars

Now I had the 24" bass and the giant floor tom

At that point I was not concerned or interested in a matching snare

I found a 14" mounted tom on eBay that had been drilled for leg brackets

My thought was to have Village Drum cut it down to a more standard depth

to end up with sort of a GIANT "Paul Bunion" 4 pc kit (I have several deep chrome snare drums)

Unfortunately cutting the shell down would not rid me of the extra holes

made for the leg brackets

I was back on the bay looking for a better 14"

That was when I ran into our Portland OR seller

He had the 14" but I saw he also had the snare drum

and a 12" and 13" toms as well

I shelled out 630.00 shipped

for those four drums plus the Omni-sphere double tom mount

He wanted 399.99 for the snare (plus shipping)

he wanted around 150.00 plus shipping for each tom

We arrived at a package deal price of 600.00 shipped from Oregon to Rhode Island but he later bumped me another thirty bucks for the tom mount which I was happy as hell to get for that price

at that point I had the 24" bass 12" 13" 14" mounted toms 18" floor tom

and the snare drum featured here on this thread

This is only half of the story ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

I was back online trying to find the 16" floor tom

When I ran into a seller in Montana

This gentleman turned out to be the exact opposite of the Portland guy

I am portlandvintagedrums and the one I had was a 8x14 and MINT! Sold for $390.

I still have the rest of that kit's cherry wine drums, kind of wish I kept the 8x14 for myself but my collection has gotten pretty large and one can't really keep everything :)

When I say parts chopper I mean he removes all the hardware and sells bare shells and sells the lugs all just to make money thus bastardizing perfectly good vintage drums!

Here are a few options Kenwood. There is a post on this forum by Posterboy that gives a great option for replacement lugs for King Beats, 8056s and Powermetals that I will link for you. These lugs are from stdrums out of Germany but i have ordered from them many times and they are as smooth as can be. I will link the actual lug also. Another option is the Powermetal lug which is a great lug, tube style, very cool looking and very strong. Sometime these lugs will pop up on eBay.

No, I have nothing to do with those Tama lugs in the previous posts. I only had the 8x14 MINT cherry wine snare drum. 8x14's go for more money anyway, not the same as the 6.5 you bought from Steve, the other eBay seller here in Portland. Steve is not a very reputable drum reseller on Craigslist, switch and baits buyers etc... anyhoo

Eric very pleased to meet you

I thought both snare drums were the same size

and I remember yours was going for close to four hundred

I actually put in a few offers on I think a 13" that you had

I exceeded the three best offer attempts and was excluded from making further offers

Oh yes Now I understand what you were saying with regard to chopping up a nice drum for the sum of it's parts I still dislike breaking up whole kits as mentioned

But I absolutely despise those sellers that ruin otherwise nice old drums to sell the parts at inflated prices still their right to do so and perhaps the only way for some restorers to source rare parts but yes it goes against the grain for me as well

Nacci Thanks very kindly

The thought did come to mind to perhaps try some tube style lugs

and so far I have not touched the snare drum

my guess would be there would be some shadowing or other tell-tale outline

Of the original lugs on the finish of the snare drum shell

also they would not match the styling carried over to the bass and toms

If it were a metal snare that would be a better option for me

BUT I like the way your thinking just the same ^5's

Hi all: I haven't posted here in about 4 years. I forgot I even had an acct. Sorry for chiming in late on the lug stuff. The 4" long mighty lugs are hard to find and in good condition will sell for over $20.00 each. I almost grabbed those ones on Feebay, until I noticed the lug posts were all bent. Why or how someone would over tighten tension rods so much as to bend the posts is a mystery to me... anyways, yes the mighty lugs usually leave an imprint on the shell, so going to tube lugs is really not ideal. Plus keeping Tama gear original is much more desirable IMHO. I would wait until good lugs do come up for sale, and then sell off what is not needed. I'm from Western Canada, and I collect and restore vintage Tama drums. Sometimes I even try to sell some of them..LOL...

The monster Superstar Super Aqua Marine kit on FeeBay is one of my projects. I'm not an all out Guru on vintage Tama drums but after 15 years collecting and restoring, I've learned a few things. Please feel free to contact me if you have a question.
