Building a '60s MIJ BOP kit

Loading...

So with all the shells I have kicking around, and the fact that I got a bunch of good drum wrap in. I decided to make a bop kit out of some of my '60s MIJ shells. Going with a 16" bass ( with actual bass rims ) 12" tom, 14" floor tom, 10" snare. Wrapping the drums in a stunning mirror chrome. I mean seriously, this is a real mirror chrome. The 12" is all set. Getting the wrap applied on the 14" and then I just need to drill out all the holes on the 14" & 16". Add the lugs,legs,etc... Gonna be a sweet looking little kit. After I took the photo of the 12" tom completed, I noticed the rim needs a serious polish in comparison to the shell, lol. So I'm gonna get that set before I post a completed photo.

Cool! Keep the pictures coming. Funny, I started working on an orphan COW bop kit myself... though I think these shells are Taiwanese. Different sizes, but a 16" BD. I'll post pics if/ when I get it done.

Wanted: Pearl President floor tom in Golden Grain wrap and rack tom in Tiger Eye (root beer) wrap.

tris66 I didn't even think of COW ( though it truly is ). So the idea of this being a COW BOP kit, is actually funny. I might go as far as to do a cow on the front bass head, lol

I happened across that last night too. Western Bebop, sounds interesting. Still gotta give them a listen. I found a photo online of a cow at a bar holding a martini. That is on the front head now. Kit is actually almost done, went out to the shop for 5 minutes. 4 hours later, lol

Got the kit completed and man, it looks incredible. I'm honestly really proud of myself on this one. I'll get some good full kit shots tomorrow. Was gonna snap a few, but it started to down pour like mad and the garage took on a little water, so my priorities shifted a little. Thankfully no damage to anything, but you know the scramble when you see the blob moving your way,lol

Here are some progress shots though. The 14" when I started to drill the holes and then it all complete.

What I did for the bass drum pedal was build a little hoop for the pedal to clamp to, as well as to hold the rear of the drum up. I built a lip so a bass pedal literally slides right onto it and clamps down perfectly. This way it's always level. Drilled one small hole on the bottom of the bass for the screw to go through. Aside that the only holes were the three extra for the spurs. I used one of the existing holes from the floor tom leg brackets as my base. And of course I had to have the cow with a martini ( or should I say Cowtini ) on the front head.
