Mij steal !

So, I just found this vintage Baxter kit, with what looks to be a Hoshino badge.. Standard 12-13-16-22 and 10 lug bass drum.. Spoke to the seller and he was nice enough to offer to deliver the drums for me, seeing as how i have no car and he's a good 40 minutes away. At $50 Cdn. price can't be beat, and that's with delivery included !!.;)

Don;t know much about some of these Baxter kits, but i have read mixed feelings about them.. I'll clean them up, put some fresh heads on them, and will gig them for Grand Prix weekend next week to see how they sound.. If they don't have that vintage mojo, it'll be flipping time .. Hopefully the bearing edges will be ok. I'll probably clean them up and lightly sand and wax if they're not too bad..

Any thoughts on these drums are appreciated

A daring statment:

Any 50$ MIJ kit can be made to sound just as good any other expensive American or European made kit (with comparable sizes, thcknesses of shells, style of hoops etc.).

Most important is: They need to be more or less in round and you really have to take care that the bearing edges are perfect (not so so). Use iolated floortom feet on the floortom legs and the bass drums spurs.

For vintage sound: round edges and nothing more fancy than a single ply coated head (or a double ply coated for batter).

My two cents.

Very nice buy. I'd buy any kit like that for $50 Cnd or US. Good luck and let's hope it works out as well as it looks.

Thanks for the insight ! And you're absolutely right about MIJ kits sounding just as good as their American counterparts..I should know, i've got a vintage Stewart 20x14 kick that sounds wonderful with a Fiberskyn head and felt strip on the resonant side and P3 coated on batter.. Perfect..For that particular drum of course..;) We'll see how this Baxter kit holds up to some new heads and proper tuning..I'm optimistic about it..

Agree 100%. Are there MIJ kit's that are only good for "fire wood"?, yes, but there are ones out there that are real gems, and will produce the same sonic results as their American counter part's. I often wonder if those anti MIJ people play a name or a drum.

I judge by my ears.
