Late 70's Slingerland value

Loading...

I am close to purchasing a four piece late 70's Slingerland drum set finished in Blue Gloss wrap. The kit is in very good shape with the exception of some lifting of the wrap on the floor tom. The shells are five ply without re-enforcement rings. I have owned several three ply Slingerland kits but not the five ply. Are these similar to the Ludwig's of the time? What would a fair price be without a snare? 22, 12, 13 and 16 in standard depth sizes.

I bought them. Have any of you played the Slingy 5 ply and how did they sound?

Thanks,

I believe my 70s Slingy kit is of the same make. I must say its sound is superior to that of my beloved Camcos and Ludwig club dates.

Not only is Slingerland the best value on the vintage market, sound wise it is the best in my opinion. So a win-win.

I thought you were thinning the herd Verm? Looks like just the opposite lately :) Congrats! Smart purchase. Keep these!

ps Oh, fair price? I would have gone $600-700 for what you got. Not a super desirable wrap but who cares. Sound is the thing.

I paid a little more, but it came with some cymbals and a Supra. It is re-collecting time for sure. But, I'm back to six kits, so . . . . . .. . . .. .

My slingerland five ply is my go to kit for about 35 years. They sound great tuned hi or low. I generally use remo ambassadors but I could imagine double ply heads would work also depending on what you are going for sound wise. I'm glad that the vintage collectors desire these less because they are really well built drums that sound great in all styles and they remain relatively inexpensive (knock on wood).

The sound is "thicker" with more clear resonance than the 3-ply. It was the sound of the late seventies and early eighties. Heavier than the previuos era of sound. The bearing edges are unique and unlike modern edges wich I think accounts in large part for the sound.

I just noticed that the badges seem to have gold lettering which would place the dating of the drums more into the early 80's time line. Is there any monetary issue with this? Is it possible that these could be the import crappy kits? I am picking the kit up at the end of the month (to avoid shipping) so I have not laid my eyes on them.

I just got the kit set up and I must say I am impressed by the sound of these five ply shells. The seller conveniently did not mention that there were extra holes in the bass drum and toms. The kit currently has the correct tom mounting hardware on, but at some time in the past, a Yamaha mount was installed and then removed. The drums are in very good shape overall with the floor tom having a tear in the wrap. The set sounds amazing and came with a 70's 5x14 Supra in very good shape as well as a 20 inch Zildjian ping ride, 14 inch Zildjian Avedis Hi Hats, 16 inch Zildjian Avedis Crash and 18 inch Zildjian Rock Crash. The original stands were included as well including the foot pedal which works surprisingly well. I am very pleased to have these.
