Need some advice on restoring old drum please

I recently bought this 1949 Gretsch Renown Mahogany Parade drum. I've carefully removed heads, lugs, snares - took everything off the drum except the Badge. The drum is in good shape no bad nicks, the finish is okay.

I thought I'd just clean everything and not restore/refinish it because it looks okay and I'm happy with it.

But, if I was to decide to refinish the drum.......is that a good idea? The mahogany shell is pretty light-weight and I don't want to damage it in any way. I'm worried about the Gretsch badge..........I would not want to screw that up.

Thoughts??

Basically you'd have to remove the badge...in which case the grommet would likely get destroyed. Once the badge is off, you can remove the lacq either by sanding or using a lacquer remover. Sand the shell down and refinish as desired.

But you need to take the badge off, definitely. Also, with Gretsch, make sure you leave the bearing edges intact if they are in good shape.

Thanks for that.........that's what I thought regarding the badge.

I'll leave the the way it is........it's in pretty good shape for 60 yrs. old - not like me....Hurting lol. I bought it because I wanted something in my birthyear and I like Gretsch drums.

I'll put the hardware back on with a new fiberskyn head and it should be great. It sounded pretty good right out of the box last week (got it for $135usd - about $275can by the time it was delivered........shipping, brokerage fee, a few taxes and a little bit-o-exchange). I'm good with that - got a nice little piece of Gretsch historyClapping Happy2

Wow...yeah that's a pretty good find ! Jut use some furniture polis to spiff it up a bit, and yes...I'd leave it with the original finish given it's not butt-ugly or really damaged.

Enjoy !!!!
