Ludwig lugs etc

I have just purchased a 60's Ludwig in blue oyster. Some of you will have contributed to or read my post over in the Non USA section http://www.vintagedrumforum.com/showthread.php?t=8690 as I wasn't sure what it was then (no badges). It's a bit of a mongrel as it turns out.

Anyway, I've stripped and cleaned the floor tom which is in pretty reasonable condition but I noticed that the lugs were of two slightly different appearances on the inside. Now I've stripped the BD and have discovered the same thing only with the BD one of each of the lug hole pairs in the shell have been enlarged as if these lugs didn't fit at some point. They seem to be the correct type of lug for the drum and the outline left in the wrap matches up perfectly with these lugs.

Each lug is stamped inside with 2243-1 but some have a symbol of 2 W's in an incomplete circle and the others have a symbol of a house with something inside of that. The spacings for the screws are the same.

So my question is, can anyone shed any light on this mystery?

The lug in the top of the pic is one of the original spring retainer type. The lower one is a recent lug that was made to accept a springless design or a spring if desired. Look closely and you'll see the lines on the outside of the casing are a little different. The recent lugs should be the same hole pattern, so unless the shell had mini-classic lugs fitted originally and someone modified the holes to fit regular classic lugs there should be no need to elongate holes. The springless lugs are the current production ones btw.....One other possibility....the shell could be a ludwig Standard series drum and was fitted with the smooth standard style lugs originally. Those have a larger bolt pattern than the large classic lugs, so someone may have liked the classic lugs better and swapped those after elongating the holes.

Thanks Ludwig-dude. I'm certainly learning a fair bit about these kits. I've just checked and the lug hole lines up exactly in the centre of the elongated holes. It 's hard to tell but I think these would have been the right pattern lugs originally and they may have been swapped for a lug that needed an elongated hole OR it's had two other types of lug fitted requiring two extra holes (making one long one) OR someone drilled holes to take a new lug only to find they drilled the wrong side of the existing holes. Either way, someone has been way to enthusiastic with a drill. Luckily it all goes together and you can't see that the holes are elongated once everything is in place.

It'll make a nice gigging kit but won't be a collectors piece.

BTW, if anyone has the correct rack tom in blue oyster pearl (shell only is fine) that they are looking to unload, let me know.

From the picture those look like the smaller classic lugs (which went on the 12" drums, larger for most others I think); hard to say though; if that's the case, that would make sense that they'd be redrilled to fit the smaller lugs. Otherwise who knows?!

Those are definately the large lclassic lugs, the small ones are narrower and have a more dramatic slope to the end of them.
