The Leedy set is from '58 and Gretsch didn't offer Starlight until the '61 catalog, so the original owner would have had to ask Leedy (Slingerland) for a Gretsch finish that hadn't come out yet.

From Rich K.

Love the drums...I've seen them in person when Vinnie had them...but that whole idea that it's a Gretsch finish is pretty ridiculous. I doubt Slingerland called Gretsch and asked for some of their wrap. Gretsch's wraps had different backing. It is Slingerland's smokey sparkling pearl which was around during the early era of Slingerland / Leedy. It's a rare and special finish. They actually had two versions of it... one was "glitter" type and the other the uniform confetti type. I saw one set that had a combination of both on the same set.It is more lavender looking than Gretsch...I don't see why Steve or anyone would come up with that story about it having anything to do with Gretsch. Steve is great...a great seller, extremely honest and knowledgeable and I hope to buy drums from him...but I don't see why this whole idea that Slingerland asked Gretsch for wrap at a customer's request came up. It doesn't make any sense, since it was a color Slingerland was using at the time.

Hi Rich K

The information I received was indeed from Steve. However, Harry's article from 2011 also references the Smokey Sparkling Pearl & Steve made a reference to it on his website.

Having spent a good amount of time cleaning it up & bringing it back to it's original glory, the drums do indeed have a beautiful lavender hue to them. The crazy thing is the kit looks very different in different lighting situations. It looks gun metallic grey sparkle and lavender sparkle depending on the lighting. I attached some pics so to see the difference. This kit looks very much like Mike Laytons Transition Badge Ludwig Bop kit from 58 which as also supposed to be Starlight Sparkle but if this finish was not out until 61 then..

Vinnie was very cool to send me a bunch of pictures when he owned it & it was nice to connect with the previous owner to find out we have much in common.

I finally got to gig with the kit this past Saturday night & man it's an amazing sounding kit. Coated Emperors & a Powerstroke 3 on the bass drum & they did not take much to tune up either. Big warm tone & fat crack on that snare! I was in heaven!

I appreciate the input & who knows what was going on all those years ago since none of us were actually there. All I know is I love this Leedy kit!

i've got it documented somewhere, but I think my Transition badge Ludwigs in Starlight Sparkle are '59s. Don't recall if they are all date stamped or not. In fact, I think one of them is stamped Jan 24 1959, So almost 1958!

Beautiful drums Mark. Knew you had them but didn't know the history behind you getting them. They are in good hands now! Enjoy them and thanks for the pics. Pure class!Mike

Show him yours Mike!

See? I had a feeling it went like this... Danmar sent samples of that stuff to different manufacturers who used the wrap to make a few sample kits. Why it never took off as a great wrap, I"ll never know. The fact that we only have, so far, one Ludwig example and one Gretsch example speaks volumes for the utter rarity of that wrap.

Too many great drums to list here!

I've seen the set in person...I've collected Slingerlands for 25 years and this set is one of the rarest and nicest I've seen. I just don't see why many of you can't accept the fact that it's a catalogged finish, smokey sparkling pearl, that was anavailable Slingerland finish the year that these drums were made. I've seen a handful of smokey sparkling pearl drums...they were all from around 58/59 and they all looked like this set.
