once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.
Wow, quite frankly, I didn't expect to hear a comment of this nature here.LameWhile our vintage instruments are often beautiful and fun to look at and discuss the history of, being a student of them is of the utmost importance. That includes practice, and history.Additionally, I have paid my share of dues the past 30+ years playing gigs, and everything that goes into that(work!). I have refined and built my collection over those years and am very proud of them, saving several from certain ruin! Now onto the more important topic of the OP....practice. A tip I've found useful over the years is starting with the pad; practice with either a 2B or 5B pair of sticks(much heavier than you would normally use), my regimen includes singles, doubles, triples, as well as a triplet exercise, take about 10 minutes. Then onto the kit with my regular Manhattan 7A's, I have a limb coordination exercise I've been doing for years, takes about 15 minutes. I find that to be a good "workout". After that, I am ready to go!D' Drummer

There are a LOT of guys on this site actually! .. but .. this is NOT a drumming site per se ... it's a VINTAGE DRUM SITE. David's concept for the VDF was not so much the actual drumming aspect .. as there are PLENTY of other sites that cater to that end of it .. but more the Vintage Drums themselves ... the history ... restoration ... identification... etc. While we have always allowed the actual playing of the instrument to be involved, and why wouldn't we!, it is still first and foremost, a Vintage Drum Forum. Not a playing/performance forum. THAT is why these types of posts/threads don't get but a few responses ... it's not what the site is about! David's tag line: "Ask a question, get an answer" is in regard to the drums themselves, not so much the playing of them. That was the original concept going back to 2005, and still is! That's why we can get 4 pages on tension rod splay, but only a few responses on "Practice Time" . I'm not saying that isn't a good query! ... but it's not about the drums themselves, or cymbals, or hardware, etc. I would always recommend DFO for those type discussions ... not the VDF. Hope this sheds a little light on it for you! BEST!!!

Here's the 8th one, I play at least 2 hours everyday. I have gone through the stick control book several times, playing the patterns both with hands and feet. I now wrk on new patterns and fills that interest me. D' Drummer

Thank you Tommyp, I did not know that, I found this site and thought there were actual drummers here like myself, who cherish the sound of vintage drums and enjoy playing them. I knew there were the collectors here who spend most of their time cleaning and polishing, but I thought the vast majority were players. I stand corrected and will refrain from anymore comments directed at the janitors.Toilet
I think this is a good thread, Mark comes up with interesting topics all the time. And even though it is not aimed directly at vintage drum playing, restoration or collecting Im glad that Tommy and David allow us to have these typs of threads. I will say that I very much admire Tommy and David for their effort to keep this forum focused on the drums themselves. And I also think its great that they let us shy away off topic to a point. That said, I try hard to practice an hour every day, I dont do gigs (yet) so I really need it. I work on paradiddles, doubles and some funky beats, plus play along with studio recordings of the songs our band is doing.
Thank you!

Now Spartacus! ... you and I both know that is NOT what I said at all! Just about EVERYONE here plays drums!, and many full time/professionally, and I would be one of them. The point I was making was: This site, as a site, is DEDICATED to the pursuit of vintage drums, their care and feeding, their history, and all the rest that I wrote, NOT just polishing them and taking pictures. Many of us .. and I invite you to peruse some of my posts showing my drums in the "gig zone", are players and we PLAY our vintage drums. However, posts about playing technique, practice regimens, the latest "lick" one might have copped, how do you hold your sticks, ad infinitum, isn't our focus. THAT is what I was saying... and I suspect you knew that too. If you didn't quite grasp that, perhaps you will now! And I don't mean that in a malicious way at all ... certainly not intended! I will however close with this: It's rather simple actually! If this isn't the right fit for what YOU are looking for in a vintage drum forum, you don't have to participate. That's probably a better course of action rather than not being happy with what you see and read here. I am NOT saying you should leave ... not at all. I am saying we function here in a focused manner and try to stay that course. There are plenty of playing/player drum forums on the net. There is only ONE dedicated to Vintage Drums, and of course to a lesser degree, discussing the playing of them, and that would be the VDF. Although to be clear on this again, just about EVERY member here plays!, and many professionally! We just don't focus on THAT particular aspect on this forum. Now, about those Camco's?! BEST to you!

Sorry Tommyp, I didn't mean any harm. i understand what you're saying. I suppose I'm just lashing out because I've been experiencing some down time and being a full time musician, that's not good. At the moment I'm relying on my income from teaching to pay my bills. But the gigs will pick up....now, if I can just figure out what to do with that Camco kit.

I have found 99% of the time if I'm cranky online it's because of something else [bad] going on in my life. I have *never* been proud of it. You and I had a bad start but things are already looking up...sweet!

Indeed ... and I can certainly understand! In my area, and based on what and who I work for playing wise .. well .. the winter months are always pretty DEAD gig wise. Not completely of course, but not like what I work in the summer months. I crank from June to December, and pretty much play a years worth of dates/shows in 6 months! Then, the winter doldrums, and that does of course nip away at one's bottom line financially, as I am also a full time musician. So I do completely understand where you're coming from. In my case, darn good thing Deb is a nurse, carries all the insurance, and hasn't booted me to the curb in 28 years!
... glad you're still here!, and now might have a better bead on what this particular forum/group is all about. We do have the General Drum Questions category open for all the playing type discussions, a video now and again, etc. So there is a spot for those type things here!, it's just not our MAIN focus. I will say that I have put up video demos here and there of me playing certain model sets and snare drums that members have interest in, and I enjoy doing it! THANKS for your understanding!
