Much as I hate to agree, I do. :( The playing however made up for it and then some, eh?...although there was one pie I liked somewhere in the middle of the clip.

Here's a link to pure hand-hammered jazz cymbal heaven, enjoy!

Ha! True that...in fact, I watched the clip a second time and liked em all better! So it happens quick! [okay not exactly what you meant, but true]

Try listening w/o watching and see if your likes change!

Haha no need, O! I really did like em a lot more the second time through. I do love old Ks and even bought a Kerope which I used until I decided I just wasn't paying $400 for a new cymbal.

Truth be told I think it was just the mic they used although the notes list a Neumann KM 184, which I googled and it's supposed to be pretty good. Maybe it's the placement or even just the room, it seemed a tick clangy the first time. Whatever it was my brain was able to filter it/get past it and I enjoyed the clip very much. So thanks for posting that! :)

A lot goes into how they sound, take the differences between the stick types at the end of the video for instance. And of course the touch of the player as well.

Well, despite the mystique of old K's, most of the ones I've heard suck. I've owned a few, and let them all go because they don't sound good. It makes sense, if you're picky about cymbals. Each one was unique which is a double-edged sword. You have to look through a lot to find the good ones, which is difficult to do when they're as pricey as they are. I've heard great ones too but those ones are never for sale.

I heard one in the middle of the video that I thought was nice. The rest are clangy and I would have guessed they were thick A's or Sabians.

I think of old Ks as really specifically for use in jazz - they often won't cut through a rock band and they don't have a "sweet" crash; very dark and complex, not loud.

Do you play jazz? I would like to but have to get to work on making that happen heh. Anyway I wonder how they actually sounded in the room, might be a whole nother kettle of fish...

What you said about looking through many cymbals to find one you like, for me that's true of Zidjians in general. In fact the last time I went up to the local music store to buy a cymbal, there was only *one* that I liked in the whole room!......and it was a Sabian XS20!
