Any Info on this Rogers snare!

I found this snare a year or so ago. It's a Joseph Rodgers Jr and Son. Apart from knowing it was a Rodgers and made by the 'instigater' of the bearing-edge, I know nothing else...over to you.

What says the paper lable inside the drum?

It is from the 1950s. or earlier.

It's a UNION BRAND badge , so anywhere from 38-57, looking at it I would be tempted to go towards the earlier dates. There is no paper label on the inside and I can not see any residue mark's that would have been left if one had 'come off'.

Like most old Rogers ya can't date the drum by just one characteristic...like just the badge. That throw off was used around 1950-53. It is the early bird first version of the Covington OH orchestra throw off with a pop sickle shaped throw arm. They used up some Union Brand badges into the early OH scene before and then briefly during the new eagle badges. Some of those Union Brand(Farmingdale NJ badge) early OH drums do not have an interior paper tag. I'd say the tags started around 52ish and the interior tags with serial number was stressed as a selling point by Henry Grossman for his new drum line that he made public in 1955. Great drum! Peace, Gary

Thanks for sharing that pic. Do you have one of the interior and bearing edge?

I have a Grossman Music mailer sent out in 1952/53 for the new 1953 Grossman catalog binder that is boasting about the new drums with a serial numbered paper tags. The earliest tag is in the history tag section under Rogers 1938-1954 here on the VSD web site. In the 3xxx range. I'd say that drum is around 52-53. By 1954 the orchestra throw off is shown with a tapered/shaped arm but still flat(no twist). So..no tag on your snare and that throw off would be around 1950-52. Paper tags were 52 maybe and by 53 for sure. Same era as the drums below. No paper tags either on those. I wasn't there(OH) at the time. But can tell you what the drums found told me and the Grossman Music counter catalog pages recently found that helped put some dates to the drums. Peace, Gary
