Cut Down Pioneer to 13"?

Loading...

"A lateral cut around a 13" tom shell would require a table saw [don't have one] and some care, and then I'd have to remove and re-install the re-ring, whereas I'll just be hacking straight across this thing with a jigsaw, squeezing it into a 13" head, marking off the extra, and one last cut."

I may be missing something, but cutting down a 9x13 gives you the 6-hole layout - just drill the bottom holes. And seriously, a handsaw and sandpaper, maybe a file, some glue and clamps are all you need. It's not hard. Your project is cool, but all the filling and redrilling seems like the hard way to me. Maybe I misunderstood.

Disappointing to read that you are going to source the bottom hoop. I've been holding my breath to see how that gets cut down. Kidding, of course, but the overall process is pretty cool. Will be quite interesting to find out what you think of the finished product. In the short term, you could use a modern 13" snare side.

Hello Floyd! I think the key element here is that a 14" Pioneer shell, with issues, is what I had lying around. If I'd had a 13" tom shell, with issues, lying around, I definitely would have worked with that!

Still, I'm glad I didn't have to chisel off a re-ring - they seem rather well-glued on there [tho I've never tried it - maybe they pop right off?] Also I'm not sure the top hole for a classic lug would put a bowtie in the middle of a 5+" deep shell, so there might have been about the same amount of filling and drilling...again not sure. I definitely would have had to add snare beds to a 13" tom shell...

All in all I do certainly see your point, but feel it might have been six-of-one etc....and as I say, the 14" Pioneer is what I had to work with, so there was never really any question.

Thanks Dan. I laughed out loud at the idea of cutting down a triple-flange steel rim....now I'll just re-position these holes with my metal-shifting tool lol.....

I got it together a bit too late tonight to really smack it. Tomorrow I'll start fooling with tuning....then when the wrap comes, I'm going to glue it down all around the shell, so that will likely mellow it out a bit.

Believe me when I get that silver sparkle wrap on there, there will be pictures!

Thanks ratamacue!

I have good news to report - I played this 13" snare for awhile today and it is amazing. Dry, woody, responsive, just fantastic! So, the title of this thread is a question which I can now answer definitively - yes! you can cut a 14" 3-ply shell with re-rings down to 13" with total success.

All that's left is to wrap it in that excellent silver sparkle from precision and take some final pics. Shouldn't be more than a couple days....

Again. this goes to show...... I like that.

Drumcompanies and drum-buyers all making a big fuzz about woodtypes, constructiontypes, etc......... Maybe allmost anything goes (provided the bearingedges are ok and there's some decent heads).

Thanks dudes!

Jeff, the black holes you see are actually the original casing holes, plugged by the lug-shifter wizard lol - the drum was painted black and I couldn't get the paint out of the end-grain of those plugs. Other than the vent, which I am indeed going to plug with a "medallion" cut from the off-cut shell piece, [and then center the badge in that panel], there are only the butt and throw-off holes left. I think I will plug those with toothpicks. So yes, just for the good feeling of it, I intend to plug any extraneous holes. The baseball bat muffler hole is just a tick off-center in the panel, so I think I will use it as is...

Geez I cain't hardly wait for this wrap to arrive....
