Cymbal selection question

Currently playing in a funk/soul/r&b/disco group covering everything from 60s to 80s (some 90s). We cover everything from Aretha/Marvin to Chicago, Earth Wind and Fire, Commodores, Trammps, etc.. Exciting band to play with, full horn section!! Especially considering the last couple of years have consisted of classic country.. great music, but not much excitement there.

At the moment I'm using a 21" Zildjian A Rock Ride, 16" Sabian AA Medium Crash, 18" K Dark Thin Crash, and Paiste Signature Dry Crisp Hats. I'm a bit of a minimalist and want to consolidate down to a crash-able ride that still has some stick definition, and a 17" or about crash cymbal. I'm normally partial to Zildjian (though my current set up is a mix at the moment).. just curious to hear some of you guys' ride/crash setups if you play that sort of setup. Thanks!!!

Of my three rides ( Paiste 2002 22" Heavy, Sabian AAX 20" Stage Ride, and my 1960's Zildjian 22" Light Ride ) I use the Zildjian most often. Most versatile of the three and I can crash into it. Which for my pop / rock band is perfect since I have hats,ride, and two crashes. I have always loved the Zildjian Sweet Rides, actually really want one. I'd look into one of those for a ride. As for a crash, I'm personally all over with regards to them.

The hollow logo Zildjians I am playing now are the best sounding set of cymbals I've ever played. 22" ping ride, 18" crash, 16" crash and a set of 15" hollow logo hats that just kill.

I haven't gigged in quite awhile, but if I was still playing out, this would be my go-to set of cymbals.

Thanks John! Good to hear from you, it's been a while! I'll keep an eye out for some hollow logos and try them out. I used to have a 20" Zildjian hollow from the 70's and though it was a nice cymbal, it was a bit too heavy and I traded it off. It was a medium ride I believe.

To narrow or reduce yr line up..

Try a 21/22 zild A ride with rivits (50s) is the best..(go to #1 ride)...or all the music yr speaking off,...this is heaven..!

Also to reduce having lots of crashes...try a 18" crash/ride.!

I do have 2 from the 60s ...both Xcel in rides (high notes) 1625g & 1785g.

The heavier model has both the better ride & is great for crashing..(lacks alil on the bell).

I also use a late 40s 12" paper thin splash..this is a must for Motown & funk..

My hats are late 40s 14" paper thins & a set of 60s 13" new beats...

The new beats work best with funk,soul..

I think the 22" sizzle ride & 18 crash/ride would help you

Excellent! I am kind of looking at the two rides that mlayton has for sale. Both are 22" from the 50s. Haven't decided to pull the trigger yet. Thanks for your reply, good information there

I should say that my fav ride is a 50s Big hollow Stamp, it's about 21.5" with about 8 rivits.. Mlayton had one also ident to mine...

In all honesty....I would Never sell mine Period.

The sound range is incredible, at times it can sound like Rain,

also the bell has 2 diff sounds..loud & piercing...

I did Just see another for sale at a decent vintage drum store,

it was listed for $500!

P.s. My fav crash Cym for years was a Sab AA med/crash...same as yours listed,...about 10yrs ago I came across a zild A (early 70s Canada) 16" crash at 1025g....its Perfect...Live & in the studio....

Keep it in mind...!
