I'm in the process of ordering a calf batter for the RK snare, but now am worrying it won't sound right as I'm keeping the plastic reso head on, getting the reso as well is super expensive and will be even worse dealing with weather related problems, but if it sounds crap mixed with plastic.....I've heard people say it's not the same and sounds bad
Any views on this?
I think it's all a matter of opinion. I mean my 1938 Ludwig & Ludwig kit has tacked on calf skin bottom head, new heads on top. Sounds great. I honestly prefer modern snare side heads. You get so much more sensitivity and life.
My first ever Sound King came ex factory fitted with calf batter & clear plastic reso... Did not seem a concern for Slingerland at the time...

Yes you are right about it being subjective D'ya know this only just crossed my mind, right after I requested he make the skin. It's just that I heard some snares being played on you tube with calf top but plastic on bottom and I hated the sound, the drum sounds great as is but there's always this need to experiment.
Yes I believe a few snares even in the 60s came with calf batter and plastic reso heads. It's a pity it costs so much just to find out.:confused:
Get a REMO Skyntone instead of the calf...FYI
I've had that head on my other wood snare and it was the best I've heard of those type of heads really good but the heads are going to be made oversized to fit better, I'm actually waiting to see if remo can do this but this time I'm going for an ambassador. And diplomat reso. So I might be getting a boatload of different heads!
Although the skyntone did choke up at higher tension, that was why I stopped using it ,
Just read an article, Mel Lewis used calf batter only on snares..so if it's good enough for him.:) ha, don't spoil it for me!
