COB Imperial Lugs

Loading...

Hi there. i was just wondering what material Imperial lugs are made of. are they always COB? i'm asking because on all of my drums a magnet wouldn'T stick to the Imperials... (1960s SS, 1970s SS, 1970s Supras) and what about the bow ties???

The lugs are a die cast piece, probably a zinc/aluminum alloy....a magnet won't stick to either type of metal either way. When we state the drum is COB we are referring to the shell and not the lugs. And to answer the last part, all of Ludwig's cast lugs are made of the same material as I stated above, so same deal with the magnet.

ahh, okay.... well of course i know that if we say COB snare we mean the shell, and the lugs go "extra". i only always thought the Lugs were normally made out of cast steel... that's why i was confused when i did a random magnet placement...

Is the alloy thing true for the 1st gen. Imperials as well (as found on my 1960 COB Supra?)? early (1920s...) tubelugs could be brass though, right?

thanks.

All cast ludwig lugs are alloy. The tube lugs are probably brass though......

Lugs are in general made of an alloy we call Zamac, also brackets, some parts of hardware are made of this: every part which is not pressed but molded. Of course die cast hoops are molded but not zamac because it would be to heavy and too stiff making tuning difficult.

I went to school with a Bob Zamac. What are the odds? He was quite heavy and a bore and a stiff. Small world.

Seriously, does this alloy have a zinc base?

I don't know what the zamac alloy is made of, anyway a magnet doesn't stick on it. I've also heard (never tried) that you can't weld zamac part together like iron, so it probably contains no iron.

I've had Imperial lugs being rechromed and the man at the company said it's a difficult material to put chrome on.
