This seller is an out and out chump. I bought A 13" Radio King tom from him knowing of the hole issues. He removed the top head prior to shipping to tell me one of the tom lugs likely would need to be replaced since a fastening screw was sheared off inside one of the fasteners. Good on him for that. What HE DIDN'T reveal was upon removing the head an overwhelming mold smell permeates the air. The shell had major water damage and the 2nd of 3 plys is ROTTED. He refuses to accept the shell back and return my money although he is offering a "discount" The shell is trashed and he won't take it back. I also purchased some vintage hardware from him to be used in a photo shoot. He GUARANTEED me it would arrive in time. IT DID NOT until two days after what we agreed upon. So now I am stuck with hardware I couldn't use for the purpose I intended and again, HE WILL NOT REFUND MY MONEY. DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THIS KID. He is trading money for his reputation. His name is Josh Fry and his email is Hacksawdrums@gmail.com...HACKSAW IS RIGHT.

Does the drum still tune up and sound good? If so, you could probably sell it as is and get back some of your cash.

Since this was an orphan and the wrap is trashed I was planning on stripping the wrap and staining to match my bass drum and tom. I'm concerned that once the wrap is off the water damage will show on the shell and the inner ply being rotted doesn't bode well for the integrity of the drum IMHO. I really don't want to resell a shell I got burned on. Bad experience with a less than honest seller.

a little wood putty will take care of the edges.

i'm not defending the guy or belittling your situation. he should of been up front about everything.

he's on facebook ALL the time selling vintage drums and his "custom" drums.

its quite annoying and he flaked on some sales with me so he's not someone i will deal with for that reason.

Ya, i'm not taking any sides either, however that bearing edge is showing breakdown of the inside poplar 2nd ply. That is actually really common in slingerland shells. It is also very common in slingerland shells for the innermost ply of maple or mahogany depending on the era to bubble up and split. It's not a water damage issue or mold issue but more of a dried brittle issue. I'm starting to think maybe the glues they used had something to do with it. Who knows.. Not saying that's your case. Just stating it as a common factor. What does the inside of the drum look like?

Ya, i'm not taking any sides either, however that bearing edge is showing breakdown of the inside poplar 2nd ply. That is actually really common in slingerland shells. No, it is common in old Slingys that have been in a barn or damp basement and not stored properly. Drums that have been cared for do not suffer from these problems. It is also very common in slingerland shells for the innermost ply of maple or mahogany depending on the era to bubble up and split. Once again, common for ABUSED drums. It's not a water damage issue or mold issue but more of a dried brittle issue. It is 100% a moisture issue, every time. I'm starting to think maybe the glues they used had something to do with it. . It didn't. Who knows.. People who make a living working with wood and glue. Not saying that's your case. Just stating it as a common factor. Another common factor is that a lot of 70ish year old drums have probably spent a good chunk of their life being stored in less than ideal conditions, such as damp basements or sheds. Thx for that Mike17

What I can tell you is when I removed the top head to look inside an overwhelming MOLD smell permeated the air read my post again. The wrap has spots all over it like something got underneath. I have a slingerland shell from the 30's and it is still pristine.

The thing is JOSH FRY sold me this drum. He took the top head off as well to tell me about a broken lug. Unless he can't smell whatsoever he knew this shell was damaged. I am upset over this transaction and he won't take the shell back "because I don't want to have to try to sell it again". That amounts to chump change in my book...JOSH FRY is disreputable.

I think we all got the point and apparently Mr. Josh Fry could care less.
