Hi All.Just new to this forum, although I must say the information from here and also the Vintage Drums site is fantastic.I recently discovered a Ludwig Super Sensitive snare (6.5 x 14) in my mother in laws garage, so I have taken it upon myself to restore it. I have ascertained that the snare shell has been refinished at some time (there were some obvious signs...), so I have now stripped it back to its raw mahogany.One thing though that has got me is that I noticed that on the exterior of the shell is a raised edge of sorts, I have attached a picture to help explain it.My initial approach was going to have it refinished in a clear lacquer however I am now wondering if this snare originally had a Wrap?Is anyone able to assist me on this one?cheers Matthew

Does the grommet look buggered with from the inside ?

It's hard to tell from the pics, but the mahogany shells were often a single ply with re-rings. That being possible, the lap joint appears it was for a wrap. The single ply stained shells have smooth lap joints. However, the grommet looks untouched. Is the badge loose?Either way, if you are refinishing the drum you will have to remove it. A nice vintage wrap would look beautiful when done. i.e. peacock pearlGood luck and keep the pics coming!
