My son and I want to get a 22" Vintage Ludwig BD head for the 1960/1962 WMP Super Classic kit we recently acquired. According to Ludwig, the head is model number LW4222V and the image on the Ludwig site is on the left below. When I go on an online seller like Cascio Interstate, they show LW4222V with the addition of USA under the name and with a greyish color, as shown on the right. When I went onto the Musician's Friend site, the logo on the head pictured looks correct, but a purchaser commented with the following, "it has U.S.A. under the logo which is not on vintage heads. And lastly the most annoying, vintage logo heads were coated, this is not coated, its not even white, its a transparent smooth white head. You can kind of see through it and it looks kind of hazy grey under certain lighting."So, any thoughts on where I can get an accurate (without USA and with proper coating) 60's style 22" Ludwig Vintage BD head would be much appreciated. I see them on a number of kits shown here so I assume they must be available somewhere.
Personally, i'm not a fan of Ludwig stock heads.. Their construction isn't the best and they have to be tuned up quite high in order to achieve a desired tone or pitch.. I think they've taken that into account because now all Ludwig high end series drums will have standard Remo drum heads..Most drummers who use Ludwig will eventually switch them out for Remo or any other preferred drum heads anyway.
Like some members have stated up here, you can always pick up a few vintage logo style decals and place them on your favorite heads. They're durable and are identical the real logos..
