Pearl snare identification

Loading...

Hi fellas, it's been a while since my last post but here's my first Pearl snare. It looks like the Professional model but it's not. Any idea which model this is? And also the era it was made. I can't find any information on it. Thanks for all the info, I'm sure it's been asked many times before so my apologies.

Additional info: For a steel shell it's not heavy at all. Probably not made in Japan? I've heard of the dlx snare but also can't seem to find anything on it. Bought it for €50 so I don't know if it was a good deal or not.

If no one on here has any insight the guys on the Pearl Forum might. Chances are you'd get an actual Pearl worker to reply and tell you exactly what you have. But for 50 euros that's a good deal. Looks like 10 lugs and looks like it had a beefy strainer assembly. Any way you can take some photos of the strainer, butt plate and underside of the snare? Might help ID it.

Hi, I've should have know better to post more pictures but thank you for the reminder ARCHxANGEL.

In the last picture you can see that the shell is not seamless.

I'm really leaning towards it being a professional model and someone replaced the strainer and adjustable butt side. On the side without the lever, was one originally there and taken off - or broken off? Only Pearl snares that have 10 lugs and the extended snares with those gates are the Professional Models ( far as I can tell ) But the strainer and butt are far too " generic " to be original to the drum. They may have fit the hole spacing, but they just don't sit right with me. They don't even have Pearl on them. All my Pearl snares have it written somewhere on the strainer, I think that is what every company did.

All the Professional models I've seen has it name on the badge, this one doesn't. Aren't the Professional models COB?

About the throw off and butt end, you could be right. I had the same throw off on my cheap Juggs snare drum.

But looking at the shell, it seems different from the other shells.

All Pearl shells that I see have 3 bands in the center of the shell, this one has 2 double bands off center. And I just noticed the word TAIWAN imprinted in the top hoop. Could be only the hoop but who knows.

Not surprised at the hoop change if the strainers were in fact also swapped. This could be a transition badge snare. That badge looks early 80's and one they didn't use for long if I'm not mistaken.

3 bands in the center of the shell designates a Pearl COB shell and 2 double bands off center designates a COS shell (like the D4514 in the 1980 catalogue). The confusing part here is the snare drop gates with that generic strainer. From what I can see in the catalogues, drop gates come about between '80 & '84, usually with the S-015EX extended Gladstone-type strainer (when not using parallel strainer). in 1980 there was just a drop gate bolted to bottom rim & by '84 it was a full-fledged drop-gate with bridge function and adjustable butt end, both bolted to the shell. I'm with ARCHxANGEL that this snare is early 80's. I'm assuming before the Professional series the debuted in '84. Vintage Drum guide doesn't show this transition badge, just the Pearl Rectangle Badge 80-83, like the badge on this drum but with a thicker band of white underneath containing serial #s, then the badge on Professional models in '84. I haven't really answered any questions, just added some observations...sorry! I'm just curious about this one.

Thank you guys for the insight. So the snare maybe a transition period drum or altered by someone somehow.

What you've concluded is correct. Pearl did offer a very professional model SD in the 1970s -- the Jupiter. It rivaled Ludwig's Super Sensitive model in just about every way, including a parallel throw-off. They were available in 5x14 and 6.5x14, and also in COB and COS.

This one is not either of those...

I have a CB700 10 lug wristwatch snare with that exact same shell (and strainer). I have not re-headed it yet, but my first impressions are that it is a very quality snare - quite heavy and one of their much better ones. Looks like you got a cool snare there which will likely sound great once you have it set up right (heads/wires, etc.)

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!
