Hey O-Lugs.. So I'm reading the wikipedia article on Hayman drums and who shows up as the big innovator..your man Mr. Ivor Aribiter.

That guy had a vision!

YES! Ivor was into some visionary things. He was probably the last of his kind, sadly. He had the connections with musicians and industry people that made it possible to get things done. I'm sure there are other people who are doing innovative things, but they don't have the clout in the industry that Ivor did. He was able to actually get something into the market that broke every preconceived idea about how tension was applied to a drumhead. His critics asked, "Why?" Why create a "solution" to something that was not in need of one? Lugged drums worked fine. Why change?

Answers could range from things like...the entire perimeter of the flesh hoop would have more equalized tension as opposed to the slight changes between the lugs of a conventional design... In the real old days of drums, the solution was to add more lugs! Some of those old drums have, like 30 lugs on them so that the tension could be equalized all around the head...better tone was the goal, I suppose...but after adding all those extra lugs, the shells were basically dead.

Another answer (a much more subjective one) could be the looks of the drums. I really like the unfettered clarity of the lacquered maple shells. I think they look classy. And, knowing that the AT tuning system is really quite ...well..."advanced"...even though the drums look simple, is an attraction. That's just my opinion, of course. The drums are like finely made watches, as far as I'm concerned.

I've had quite a few odd sized single-tension drums that i was never able to positively ID. Part of the fun of collecting.

Grantro - is that the drum kit for Devo??

Pgm554 - Those glass drums are incredible, heard about the company years ago and was instantly like " Glass,seriously?? " but man are those drums solid. They did a test by only giving rim shots, ended up breaking the rim before doing any damage to the drum. They sound fantastic, but man do they run a pretty penny.
