Still one good thing about it is we get to hang on the VDF!!

The Sears catalog was legendary. You could buy anything from a new home to a drum kit.

And there was that time a few years back when our esteemed leader Tommyp went crazy and tried to go all New Coke on us and change the VDF to a slicker look - that is until we revolted! :)

Yep, the Sears catalog...Christmas Edition! I also loved Radio Shack, Lafayette, Allied and Heathkit catalogs! As for my drum catalogs, I picked those up at the local music stores.

Thanks for posting that! I've had a little black plastic disk labeled Fibes Cym-Set in my parts drawer for years not knowing what the heck it was. Now I know what it was used for. You're right... great catalog!

Ah... but there's MORE to this story! Regarding the Fibes Cym-Set: All you had to do was ask Mike! But that said: Originally, those were manufactured out of an actual "rubber" type material with a polished/finished underside. Reason I know that is, back in 1973, after I had just seen Billy Cobham with the Mahavishnu Orchestra playing his CLEAR Crystalite Fibes, I noticed that he was using one of those Cym-Sets under his ride. Being young, impressionable, and full of hero worship! .. ( Buddy and Billy! How did I manage??!! ) .. I trotted down to EU Wurlitzer in Boston, MA the next day to have a look at one of those. Well, it intrigued me, so I bought it. I used it for years actually, and it did what they said it does. I eventually sold those drums and the Cym-Set ... but bought another one many years later when I saw it pop up on eBay, still in the bag. I honestly bought it out of nostalgia truth be told, as my playing style and taste in cymbals had changed over the years. Anyway!, and the point of this whole story... the newer/later Fibes Cym-Set is made out of hard plastic, top and bottom. Not the material of the original at all! It still does what it's supposed to, but nowhere near as well... it's actually kind of harsh sounding .. meaning .. it doesn't dampen those "unwanted overtones" like the original model certainly did. Course, MUCH CHEAPER to manufacture the NEW version as it's just a piece of molded plastic. I still have one, NEW in the bag, and unopened. So now I'm curious Mike: Which one did you have in your parts drawer? EASY to tell the difference actually, as again, the later/newer Cym-Set is just molded plastic, where as the original model WAS some sort of "space age material". Well, don't know about that, but it was certainly different and much nicer/better!

Figures you knew all about this. My Cym-Set is the hard plastic version. Don't even remember how I acquired it. I had a hunch that it was designed to minimize sway or tilting of the ride cymbal, but since I never hit my rides hard, I've never found a need for it. What I do use under my ride is rather unconventional. It's a little rubber knob similar to the commercial Nardi Nuts pictured below, but mine came off one of those multi-arm, Zildjian cymbal display stands you see in the music shops. Works great, and no need for wing nuts.

The fact that I found a picture of these Nardi Nuts online in just ten seconds only reinforces why hardcopy catalogs are a thing of the past.

Nardi Nuts!!! Now see?, I've never even heard of those! And there you have it: The Fibes Cym-Set I did know about ... the Nardi Nuts, no! Very cool! I have to completely agree with you Mike... playing style and technique changes over the years for a lot of us as we enter different areas stylistically etc., so I have no need/use for the Cym-Set today either!, although I'll keep it for it's nostalgia. I also agree with your last statement regarding why "hard copy catalogs are a thing of the past" ... so true!, and for exactly what happened when you went looking for the... Nardi Nuts! Just about EVERYTHING is a mere click away today!
