Help me identify my vintage Pearl drumset!

Loading...

Hello All,

This is my first post in Vintage drum forum, I think you guys here can help me.

So, my first kit at 11 years old was a red sparkle vintage Pearl. I still love that kit to death because that's when I discovered my passion in drumming and really brings back memories for me. Unfortunately I had to sell the drum set when my family and I moved to the US and now I am trying to identify what year my kit was because back then I didn't know the brands and everything, I was just playing and playing. I looked up the pearl catalog in vintagedrumguide.com but the style of the lugs and the badge and the tom holders don't match any kit from the catalog. It has the black plastic badge with pearl script in gold (nothing had been modified on the drums). I am hoping to find the same kit here in the US and buy it if possible. Attached is the picture of the kit. Also, does that bass drum look 20" or 22" and the floor tom 14" or 16"? Thanks.

Appears to be early 70s, 'Battleship lug' era kit. Working on one myself, (been looking for original, double tom mount for 4 YEARS!) red sparkle, 20", 12", 13", 16", 6(?) ply, grey interiors, no badges, with 14" chrome snare. Working on a custom treatment right now, using suspension mounts for the toms, and plugging original bass drum mount holes. From my experience, these don't come up too often, as they weren't produced for that long.

Looks to be from later 1969. The badges are certainly the style used in the 1970's, but the double tom mount and lugs are from the 60's. The bass drum appears to be a 20", the floor tom 16".

Yeah I looked it up on vintagedrumguide.com but I cannot find a set that matches the same lugs, badge, and the tom holder. The NC-4 outfit from 72 has the same lugs and tom holder (1 ride tom version) but the badge on it is different. So I am guessing it is from early 70's.

Show me your red sparkle vintage pearl drums.

Yes the badges are from early 70's and those lugs were briefly used in early 70's as well. I think it is a 72, and yes that bass drum is for sure 20" and not 22".

Here's mine set up as a 4 piece - testing two tone treatment, one drum at a time only to find the secondary colour, (champagne sparkle, vinyl film) has begun buckling in places, despite my best efforts. Didn't make it to 13" tom, but I took some shots before I began peeling it all off.

Nice, that kinda looks like Gretsch renown '57. Did you have gretsch in mind when you started doing it?

My thought, too, for a Gretsch Renown 57!

Absolutely. Always thought that was a cool design - only trouble is that they aren't true 'vintage'. This is my second attempt actually. The first MIJ kit I modified like this, I'm currently using in some of my eBay listings. I thought I'd try a different colour scheme for the Pearls. Will probably replace the champagne with the same white, or possibly black, since the champagne treatment was unsucessful.
